Common Signs of Distress

Academic indicators:

  • Written work or verbal statements that reveal excessive anger, agitation, rage, isolation, or despair
  • Written work or verbal statements that are suicidal or homicidal in nature
  • Written work or verbal statements that indicate severe family problems or personal difficulties (related, for example, to death, loss or rejection)
  • Erratic attendance or performance
  • Withdrawn or disruptive behavior in class
  • Missed exams or assignments
  • Repeated requests for extensions or accommodations
  • Dropped courses
  • Poor decision making
  • Avoiding contact with advisor

Physical Signs:

  • Extreme fatigue or lethargy
  • Deterioration in hygiene or physical appearance
  • Unprovoked irritability or anger
  • Marked weight change
  • Blood shoot or dilated eyes, smelling of alcohol or marijuana
  • Prolonged sadness, tearfulness, depression
