Providence & Beyond
College Hill Brown is located in central Providence, the largest city in Rhode Island and the state capitol. Three-and a-half centuries of history are alive and well on the streets surrounding Brown, as is evident in immaculately preserved Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian houses along nearby Benefit Street, known to preservationists as “the mile of history.” Some of the attractions you’ll find in Providence and Rhode Island include:
Providence Place Mall This 13-acre downtown megamall with 150 specialty shops, restaurants, cinemas, and an IMAX theater is an architectural marvel, spanning a river and train tracks.
Waterplace Park www.waterfire.org On selected nights during the summer, Waterplace Park is home to WaterFire, an award-winning evening of art, music, and sculpture that takes place on the three rivers of downtown Providence. Hundreds of bonfires dance atop the rivers, and music from different areas of the world fills the air as strollers pass between the Italianate bridges.
Federal Hill
Entering Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood is like walking into Little Italy, with exquisite Italian cafes, bakeries, and restaurants.
Rhode Island School of Design www.RISD.edu Halfway down College Hill from Brown, RISD is a vibrant community of artists and designers that attracts more than 2,000 students from around the world.
The RISD faculty and alumni communities and the RISD Museum of Art give Providence a world-class arts scene.
Providence Performing Arts Center www.ppacri.org A restored theater and arts facility hosting first-class Broadway touring shows, plays, contemporary acts, concerts, and much more.
