Core Courses
Core courses improve your ability to communicate in real-life situations. This course integrates speaking, writing, reading, and listening. These courses meet every morning for 3 hours. Two afternoons per week, you will go on trips related to the core course topics. On the first day of the program, we will evaluate your English skills and place you in a class with students at your level.
For students who are eager to improve their English and who plan to attend university, this program is ideal. An integrated approach to your summer courses provides you with the English language skills required for writing, research and full participation in an American academic setting. An advanced level curriculum will highlight academic areas and ensure your familiarity with related idiomatic expressions and cultural expectations.
Core courses:
- Focus on key areas to improve your fluency: essential grammar, pronunciation, colloquial language, idioms and vocabulary
- Use interesting and current topics to motivate fast improvement in your English proficiency:
American politics and the world
Environmental considerations in the 21st century;
People and cultures in the United States;
Pop culture: music, art, literature, film, sports, leisure time, food, and more
- Work in small groups, with a partner and one-on-one with your teacher
- Master grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary related to your needs
- Create a presentation and a writing portfolio in the final week
- Share your own experiences and interests in class discussions to ensure that class time is exciting and meaningful
- Enjoy field trips and projects toprovide real-life experiences to support your English language development
- Prepare a final presentation and paper on topics addressed during the program

Academic Writing
This course addresses students' writing needs through a process approach. You will develop self-editing and higher-level skills in this advanced level course. If your English written and spoken expression is fluent but sometimes imperfect, this course provides the opportunity to fine-tune your English grammar. With your instructor, you will focus on the flow of your expression using sophisticated constructions as well as identify your need for sentence level corrections. You will meet in small groups with classmates which will enable you to work directly with your own writing.
Business English
The American business environment is fast-paced and exciting. In this course, you will examine case studies from real American and international corporations as you develop your English speaking and writing skills. You will also study and discuss the cultural norms and practices of American businesses. After you review real companies, you will develop strategies to help them succeed in the business world. You will prepare oral presentations and write model business plans with your classmates. For students who plan to study business at an English-speaking university, this course is the ideal introduction to the global marketplace.
TOEFL Preparation
TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, is an important academic qualification. A high score on the TOEFL test shows your ability to study in English and can be used to support your application to university. TOEFL is also recognized by many international employers. This course is appropriate for students at all proficiency levels. Students in this class review the grammar, listening, and reading-comprehension skills associated with the TOEFL test. You will also consider test-taking strategies and practice with both the computer and paper-based forms of the test. At the end of the course, you will take a practice computer-based test to evaluate your level.
