Check-in and Orientation
9 a.m.–1 p.m.
Students are required to arrive on campus at a location which will soon be determined between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the Sunday before their program starts. Students will be directed to the check-in location where they will receive their residence hall room keys, Brown I.D. card, orientation schedule, and a campus information packet. Although students should make every effort to plan their travel to Brown based on a Sunday arrival, procedures are in place to accommodate Saturday arrival for those students who are arriving from long distances and need to work around flight schedules. There is a $100 early arrival fee for students arriving on Saturday. Permission for early arrival must be requested and approved in advance of the program. If a student meets the early arrival criteria due to long-distance travel, please return to this webpage and complete the online request. As buildings are in use throughout the summer, the rooms for specific programs may not be available until Sunday at 9 a.m.; therefore, any approved early arrivals may be housed in a different building than the one they will be assigned to on Sunday.
Campus tours for students and their families will be given at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12noon. Tours depart in front of Salomon Center on the College Green.
1:30 p.m.
The formal orientation program for students begins with a Dean’s Welcome. Parents and students are invited to attend this session. On June 22nd and July 13th there will be an additional Dean’s Welcome at 11:30 a.m. An orientation for students only will take place at 3 p.m.
Arrivals after 1:00 p.m.
Students should make every effort to arrive between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the Sunday before their program starts. Students who arrive after 1:00 p.m. must check-in at the Office of Residential Life (South Wayland House, 27 Brown Street). Students who arrive after 5 p.m. must check-in at the Department of Public Safety Communication Center in the Faunce Arch (75 Waterman Street). Any student who arrives after 9 p.m. will be housed in a different building on Sunday night.
Departure Information
When to Depart From Campus
All students (including one-week students) may leave campus on Friday after attending their last class and should check out of the residence hall no later than 9:00 p.m. Some classes end at 6:30 PM. If class schedules or long distance travel plans necessitate staying on Friday night, you must request to stay until Saturday using our online form. There is no fee for extended housing; however, students must check out of their room with the Resident Advisor and return their key by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Please return your room key to the key drop box located in the Department of Public Safety Communication Center (in the Faunce Arch, 75 Waterman Street). The Communication Center is open 24/7. As buildings are in use throughout the summer, the room you were assigned to during your program may not be available for your use as a late departure. You may need to move to another residence hall on Friday night.
For Students Attending Back-to-Back Mini Course Sessions
We will make every effort to house students who are attending consecutive sessions of the same duration (e.g. 2-Week A to 2-Week B) in their original room assignment. However, you will have a new roommate. Students who are attending consecutive mini-course sessions of different durations (e.g. 1-Week session to a 3-Week session) will need to move into a different residence hall at the end of their first session. Students may not remain in their room because the residence halls will be used for another pre-college session. You are responsible for moving your belongings as residential staff are needed to check in students who are arriving for the next pre-college session. In most cases, the residence halls are located in close proximity to each other. |
