College Success Series
The core of the Summer@Brown experience is acquiring skills students need to succeed in college. With that in mind, Brown has developed the College Success Series, a series of workshops designed to help students network, learn about choices, and better understand the college admission process at selective colleges all over the United States. The College Success Series is a unique benefit of attending the pre-college summer program (no registration or additional fees necessary). Here are just a few of the workshops that are offered:
- Finding the College That’s Right for You
- Writing the College Admission Essay
- Managing the College Workload
- Interviewing Skills
- Transition to College Writing
- Path To Series, which explores medicine, law, engineering, journalism and creative arts
- Faculty Lunch Series
Summer@Brown Speaker Series
Each summer, Brown invites faculty, alumni, and other distinguished speakers to talk about important issues unfolding on the world stage today. Past speakers have included Ken Miller, Brown professor of biology and author of Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution; a film screening of Holy Wars by Sundance award winning director Stephen Marshall, and a presentation by Professor James Campbell on the historical, legal, political and moral questions of Brown’s historical relationship to slavery.
This summer’s speakers include: Katherine Chon - a graduate of Brown University ‘02 and co-founder of the Polaris Project, a Washington, DC based nonprofit organization dedicated to combating human trafficking and modern-day slavery; Wendy Schiller - Professor of Political Science and an expert on presidential elections; Gregory Elliott - Professor of Sociology who will be speaking about his research on teens and mattering; and, Christine Montross, M.D. ’06. Dr. Montross is an accomplished poet, writer, educator and alumna of the Brown Medical School. She will speak about her recently published a book entitled, Body of Work, which chronicles her journey through medical school. Students are invited to join provocative and engaging discussions that promote critical thinking and respectful debate from multiple perspectives.
Social Events
Each week students can take advantage of popular social activities on campus including dances, movies, karaoke, talent shows, yoga and swing/salsa dance instruction. All events and activities are free. Students will receive an Activities & Events Newsletter when they arrive on campus.
Resident Advisors also plan floor unit activities designed to foster community and help students transition to college.
Trips to Popular Destinations & College Visits
Excursions to popular nearby destinations such as Boston, MA, Newport, Rhode Island area beaches, shopping outlets and the RISD Museum are offered on weekends. Students are responsible for food and admission tickets on off-campus trips.
College visits are offered on Saturdays. Since space is limited by the colleges we visit, priority is given to rising seniors.
Space is limited for popular destinations and college visits. Students are strongly encouraged to sign up in the dining halls on Mondays. The trip roster will be posted in the dining halls by dinner on Wednesday.
If the trip roster is filled, students are strongly encouraged to come to the bus departure location 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. If there are seats available due to no shows, they will be assigned on a first come basis.

Brown is located in Providence, the largest city in Rhode Island and the state capitol. Three and-a-half centuries of history are alive and well on the streets surrounding Brown, as is evident in immaculately preserved Colonial, Federal, Greek revival, and Victorian houses along nearby Benefit Street, known to preservationists as “the mile of history.” Some of the attractions you’ll find in Providence and Rhode Island include:
Providence Place Mall
This 13-acre downtown mega mall with 150 specialty shops, restaurants, cinemas, and an IMAX theater is an architectural marvel, spanning a river and train tracks.
Waterplace Park
On selected nights during the summer, Waterplace Park is home to Water Fire, an award-winning evening of art, music, and sculpture that takes place on the three rivers of downtown Providence. Hundreds of bonfires dance atop the rivers, and music from different areas of the world fills the air as strollers pass between the Italianate bridges.
Federal Hill
Entering Providence’s Federal Hill neighborhood is like walking into Little Italy, with exquisite Italian cafés, bakeries, and restaurants.
Rhode Island School of
Design
Halfway down College Hill from Brown, RISD is a vibrant community of artists and designers that attracts more than 2,000 students from around the world. The RISD faculty and alumni communities and the RISD Museum of Art give Providence a world-class arts scene.
Providence Performing
Arts Center
A restored theater and arts facility hosting first-class Broadway touring shows, plays, contemporary acts, concerts, and much more.
Trinity Rep
One of the most respected regional theaters in the country, Trinity Rep is the largest professional residential company in Rhode Island.
