The Residential Experience
Housing
Students live in residence halls within walking distance of academic buildings and campus resources. Although the residence halls are coeducational, students will live in a single-sex floor unit with shared single-sex bathrooms. The residence halls have both wireless access and are wired for access to the Brown network and the Internet. Each room provides typical college furniture. Telephone service is available in all rooms, but students must bring their own telephone with an answering machine. Many students find that cell phones are a more convenient alternative. There are laundry facilities in the residence halls. Students may use their Brown I.D. card to operate laundry and vending machines. Students can add money to their Brown I.D. card in any Card Value Center (CVC) machine located on campus. The residence halls are not air conditioned. A limited quantity of window fans may be purchased at the Brown Bookstore.
For Students Attending Back-to-Back Mini-Course Sessions
Students who are enrolled in two different consecutive mini-course sessions
(e.g. 1-Week session to a 3-Week session) will need to move into a different residence hall at the end of their first session. Students may not remain in their room because the residence halls will be used for another pre-college program.
Students are responsible for moving their belongings as residential staff are needed to check in students who are arriving for the new pre-college program. In most cases, the residence halls are located in close proximity to each other.
Note: students who are enrolled in consecutive mini-course sessions of the same duration (e.g. 3-Week to 3-Week) may stay in their original room assignment. However, they will have a new roommate.
Roommates
Students are randomly assigned to single, double, or triple or quad occupancy rooms or single sex suites so that they can build friendships with new people. We do not honor roommate requests. We will, however, honor special-needs requests for documented disabilities; please provide a maximum amount of notice on the medical form.
Students taking the same course together may not be housed in the same residence hall. Students will attend class time and meals together and also have ample time to spend time with each other participating in the many extra-curricular activities that we offer.
Students who are assigned to double, triple or quad occupancy rooms must respect the rights of their roommates. These include, but are not restricted to, the right to privacy and free use of the shared room. Assistance with roommate difficulties should be first sought from their Resident Advisor (RA). If roommate difficulties are not resolved, students are encouraged to seek assistance from a dean in the Office of Summer & Continuing Studies (401) 863-7900.
Students wishing to have overnight guests must obtain the prior written permission of their roommate (s). Please refer to the Summer@Brown Student Handbook.
Room Change Requests
For security and emergency purposes, students may not change or swap their room assignment within the first 24 hours of arrival on campus. Students wishing to change their room assignment should speak with their Resident Advisor. Room assignment changes must be authorized by the Community Director who will determine whether a request can be accommodated. We may not be able to honor all room change requests.
Supervision
Students are expected to manage their time appropriately and make good choices. However, a team of carefully selected and trained Community Directors (CD’s) and Resident Advisors (RAs) live in the residence halls. These skilled and caring live-in professionals and Brown undergraduates are on hand to help students balance the competing demands of academics and socializing. The staff will be your resource for everything from assisting with roommate conflicts to guiding you through the campus resource system. Criminal background checks are conducted on residential staff with access to minors in residential settings.
Residential staff members enforce policies and help students balance the competing demands of academics and socializing. However, if you have a social or personal concern, you should seek out your Resident Advisor or any residential staff member for guidance or assistance. Professional live-in staff and Resident Advisors participate in a 24 hour on-call system to manage any emergencies that might arise.
Policies
As a member of the Brown community, you must follow rules and policies for your own well-being and for that of other students. Specific policies apply to aspects of residence life, including curfew, disruptive behavior, quiet hours, visitors and overnight leaves. Residential staff will bring unsafe and/or inappropriate behavior to the attention of the program administration. In a case where a student, in the judgment of the residential staff, fails to meet the established expectations for social and residential conduct, or shows disregard for a member of the residential staff’s directives, disciplinary action will be taken. All policies are outlined in the Summer@Brown Student Handbook which students receive when they are admitted to the program. You will also receive a Code of Conduct Agreement form for your consent and signature at the time of admission. Your commitment to upholding the program’s policies and expectations for community living will ensure our ability to provide students with a successful academic and social experience.
