Summer@Brown Orientation Assistant Positions
Qualifications
The successful applicant will be a rising sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate student currently enrolled at Brown University. We seek candidates with a demonstrated interest in providing a safe and positive check-in and orientation experience for pre-college age students enrolled in Summer@Brown programs.
Requirements
A criminal background check is required of finalists for this position. Candidates will not be permitted to begin work in this position until completion of a criminal background check deemed satisfactory to Brown.
Orientation Assistants must be available to start on June 8 and work though August 9, 2008. You must be willing and able to work weekends. Every effort is made to arrange for RAs to take at least two weekends off. You must be available to participate in staff training on Sunday, June 8 and evenings during the week of June 8 - 13.

Job Description
Under the direction of a Summer Housing Assistant, Orientation Assistants are responsible for promoting the safety and well-bring of pre-college students (age 14 - 17) who arrive early or depart late on weekends. OA's are required to:
* Attend staff training on Sunday, June 8 and during the evenings June 8 - 13
* Attend a weekly staff meeting one evening each week June 16 - August 9
* Assist with check-in & orientation on June 14-15, 21-22, 28-29, July 12-13, 19-20, 26-27, August 2-3, 8-9
* Greet pre-college students who arrive early on Saturdays and escort them to their assigned residence hall
* Welcome pre-college students and their families when they check-in on Sundays
* Supervise pre-college students overnight in a residence hall designated for early arrivals, late arrivals and late departures
* Supervise students overnight on the following Fridays: July 11, 25 and August 8
* Abide by and enforce summer program rules, and report unsafe and inappropriate behavior
* Carry a University issued cell phone and participate in on-duty rotation shifts on some weekends
* Lead pre-college students who arrive late on Sundays through an abbreviated orientation
* Escort pre-college students who arrive late on Sundays to the Office of Residential Life on Monday mornings
* Assist with various check-in & orientation duties on Saturdays and Sundays
Compensation
Orientation Assistants receive a single room in a residence hall from June 8 - August 9, 2008. This position does not include a meal plan.
You will receive a one time stipend of $100 for mandatory participation in training that takes place after 4pm on Sunday, June 8 and after 6pm in the evenings during the week of June 8 - 13. You are expected to make arrangements to ensure that other employment does not conflict with training sessions in the evenings or with your orientation duties on weekends. QUALIFICATIONS

We seek candidates with a demonstrated interest in working with pre-college age students. RAs for the Summer@Brown Program must have a strong interest in working with pre-college students in a residential college environment.
REQUIREMENTS

Job description
Under the direction of a Community Director, RAs are responsible for fostering personal and social responsibility of students, providing information, advising, discipline, and social activities required to facilitate welcoming, safe, and inclusive living-learning floor units. RAs are required to:
- Actively participate in all day RA training sessions (June 8 – 14 for pre-college RAs), (July 6 – 12 for SPARK RAs)
- RAs are required to be fully available to the Summer@Brown program evenings and weekends.
- Assist with check-in, orientation and check-out which take place on Saturdays and Sundays
- Live in the residence halls throughout the summer program
- Serve as mentors and resources about summer program policies, procedures, and calendar
- Abide by and enforce summer program rules, and report unsafe and inappropriate behavior
- Participate in a 24 hour on-call duty rotation for emergencies and/or lock outs
- Plan and facilitate activities designed to promote community, wellness and preparation for college
- Promote and encourage students to attend activities and events planned by Activities Managers
- Chaperone social events on campus and trips to popular off-campus destinations
- Distribute and collect surveys at the end of each program
- Attend staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with the Community Director on a weekly basis
- Others duties as assigned
SUMMER@BROWN RESIDENT ADVISOR POSTION DESCRIPTIONS
7-Week Credit-Bearing Program (June 8 – August 9, $2,000 stipend plus room & board)
This position is ideal for applicants who are interested in working with rising high school seniors enrolled in the credit bearing summer session. You must be a Brown undergraduate to be eligible to apply for this position. You will also be responsible for a floor unit of students June 22 – August 9. You will be assigned to assist with check-in and orientation, and chaperone on-campus activities and off-campus trips some evenings and weekends. You are required to participate in training during the week of June 8 – 14. We anticipate needing to fill 8 positions.
4-Week Mini-Course Program or 1-Week Mini-Course Program (June 8 – August 2, $1,250 plus room and board)
This position is ideal for applicants who want the flexibility to pursue research during the summer. 4-Week RAs will be responsible for a floor unit of pre-college students June 22 – July 19. 1-Week RAs will be responsible for a floor unit of pre-college students June 15-28 and July 13-26. You will be assigned to assist with check-in and orientation, and chaperone on-campus activities and off-campus trips some evenings and weekends. You are required to participate in training during the week of June 8– 14. We anticipate needing to fill 15 positions.
3-Week Mini-Course Program (June 8 – August 2, $2,000 stipend plus room & board)
This position is ideal for applicants who are interested in working with pre-college students enrolled in two consecutive 3-week mini-course sessions. You will be responsible for a floor unit of students June 22 – August 2. You will be assigned to assist with check-in and orientation and chaperone on-campus activities and off-campus trips some evenings and weekends. You are required to participate in training during the week of June 8 – 14. We anticipate needing to fill 26 positions.
2-Week Mini-Course Program (June 8 – August 9, $2,000 stipend plus room & board)
This position is ideal for applicants who are interested in combining the role of Resident Advisor with the opportunity to design and facilitate workshops on college readiness topics. The workshop design process takes place in the spring. You will receive a stipend of $100 for the work in the spring. You must be a Brown undergraduate to be eligible to apply for this position. You will be responsible for a floor unit of students enrolled in 2-week mini-course sessions that run June 29 – August 9. You will be assigned to assist with check-in and orientation and chaperone on-campus activities and off-campus trips some evenings and weekends. You are required to participate in training during the week of June 8 – 14. We anticipate needing to fill 10 positions.
Leadership Institute Fellow (June 8 – August 9, $3,000 plus room & board)
This position is ideal for applicants who are interested in combining the role of Resident Advisor with facilitating co-curricular activities that take place most afternoons and evenings. You will provide classroom support to instructors. Leadership Fellows may not take a class or work outside of the RA position. You will be responsible for a floor unit of students enrolled in three 2-week Leadership Institute sessions that run June 29 – August 9. You are required to participate in RA training the week of June 8 – 14 and Leadership Fellow training the weeks of June 16 - 28. We anticipate needing to fill 4 positions.
Intensive English Language Fellow (June 8 – August 2, $2,500 plus room & board)
This position is ideal for applicants who are interested in combining the role of Resident Advisor and Teaching Assistant. You will be responsible for a floor unit of pre-college students enrolled in a 3-week mini-course session June 22 – July 12. You will facilitate on-campus activities and off-campus trips designed to promote cultural exchange for a floor unit of international students enrolled in a 3-week Intensive English Language Program July 13 – August 2. Intensive English Language Fellows may not take a class or work outside of the RA position. You are required to participate in RA training the week of June 8 – 14 and Intensive English Language Fellow training the week of June 16 - 20. We anticipcate needing to fill 4 positions.
SPARK Program (July 6 – 31, $1,250 plus room & board)
This position is ideal for applicants who are interested in working with bright, highly motivated rising 8th and 9th graders with a strong interest in science. SPARK RAs provide 24/7 supervision for students when SPARK is in session. You are required to report to campus for training on Sunday, July 6th. You will be responsible for a floor unit of 10 – 12 middle school age students during the weeks of July 13 – 26. You will be assigned to assist with check-in and orientation and chaperone a class and field trips each day. You will also facilitate extra-curricular activities when students are not in class. SPARK RAs may not take a class or work outside of the RA position. You are required to participate in RA training the week of July 6 – 12.
