Excellence at Brown - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s in store for participants?
A: Hard work and fun. Students attend seminar classes Monday through Thursday, and use those classes and the accompanying readings as the basis for each day’s writing. Participants are paired with a graduate student with whom they meet each afternoon to review their writing. Beyond this intense focus on writing, students will meet and talk with Brown deans, administrators, and faculty. In addition, participants will have a chance to make new friends and enjoy social activities, including a dinner at Sayles Hall.
Q: Are there any activities for my parents?
A: Yes. An information session and welcoming reception for parents will be held on Sunday,
August 26 from 1-3pm at Sayles Hall.
Q: I’m a student athlete and I have training; can I still participate in Excellence?
A: The time and work commitments required for Excellence at Brown will most likely make it impossible for athletes in training to participate.
Q: I'd like to participate in more than one pre-orientation program; is this possible?
A: Excellence is a 5 day writing intensive program therefore, participation in another pre-orientation program is not possible.
Q: What if I need to come a day early or late?
A: We can assist you if you need to arrive early. All participants must arrive by Sunday, August 26.
Q: What time should I arrive at Brown?
A: On August 26th between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Check in at the Writing Center, room 213 in J.W. Wilson.
Q: How do I get to Brown?
A: Directions are available on Brown’s homepage at www.brown.edu
Q: Where do I go once I’m on campus?
A: Your first stop should be the Office of Residential Life, which is located in Grad Center E, 42 Charlesfield Street. The staff at Residential Life will give you your permanent room key. The office will be open 8:30am – 4pm on August 25th and 26th. If you arrive before or after office hours, you may contact Public Safety at 401-863-3322. An officer will key you into your room once for the night and then you must go to Residential Life the following morning to sign for the room key. Students should then go to their rooms and unpack any clothing, toiletries, and other necessities to be used during Excellence. Although you will be staying in this room for the academic year, please do not completely unpack and arrange your room without your roommate being present. This will help you avoid potential conflicts once your roommate arrives for Orientation.
Q: Do I need any money for any of the events?
A: Meals are provided from Sunday, August 26, through Friday, August 31. There are no additional fees for housing, and all social events are covered by the program. In short, there is no expense for participants.
Q: Are there services and accommodations for students with disabilities?
A: Students with disabilities can contact Student and Employee Accessibility Services (SEAS) at 401-863-9588 or email@example.com. SEAS serves students with physical, psychological, sensory, and learning disabilities. Please contact the SEAS office as soon as possible but no later than June 15.
