Guidelines for Placement Based on International Secondary School Preparation

Students who wish to receive course placement, course credit and/or advanced standing on the basis of international certification exams must present the Dean of the College Office with the original certificate of their examination scores. The DOC photocopies the certificate for the student’s file and returns the original document to the student. Students who have taken exams and have received grades equivalent to Brown’s requirements may register for more advanced courses even if their documentation has not yet been received by Brown. Consult the page on International Certification Policies on this website for specific information on Brown course equivalencies for exam scores.

Students who register for introductory courses equivalent to their exam results jeopardize their ability to receive advanced standing from the University. Students who are unsure about the appropriate course-level should consult their academic advisor, their department, or the Dean of the College Office.
