Course Lotteries, Code Tutorial, and Summer Reading Assignment

List of emails

Hello, incoming Brown students!

This week’s email provides information on two course lotteries and reminders about the summer reading and the Code tutorial.

* Course Lotteries *

The CAP/FYS lottery closes at 5:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time on Friday, July 8. A few new courses have been added to the offerings, so take a look and see if there's anything else that interests you. If spots remain open in any courses, you can also add them to your schedule during the fall registration period.

The Visual Arts 0100 lottery opens on July 15 and closes on August 5. Visual Arts 0100 (Studio Foundation) is a popular introductory course suitable for potential VA concentrators and non-concentrators alike. We'll send you the link to the online lottery during the week of July 11.

* Code Tutorial *

The package of information you received last month included a copy of Brown’s Academic and Student Conduct Codes. You are required to read this booklet and complete the required online tutorial regarding its contents. We sent you a link to the tutorial a few weeks ago; if you haven't already, please take a few moments to complete the tutorial. If you can't find the pertinent email, we will resend you the link on July 8.

* Summer reading and Letter to your Advisor *

Finally, we want to say a word about the book we sent you last month, Factory Girls, by Leslie T. Chang. Once you've read the book, please write a letter to your academic advisor, using the book as a starting point for introducing yourself. We want you to approach this letter less as an academic exercise and more as a way to give your advisor some idea of who you are and how you think. It’s also an opportunity to tell your advisor something about your goals for the next four years. To submit your letter, go to https://apps.college.brown.edu/ask/first_readings/. The letter is due no later than August 1, so that we can make sure your advisor gets it before your first advising appointment on September 6.

* Gone Fishing *

Please note that The Advising Team will be out of the office from July 4 - 8. If you have questions about the lotteries or the weekly emails, or have other concerns, please email Advising@Brown.edu. If you need to speak with an academic dean, please contact Stephen Lassonde, Deputy Dean of the College (Stephen_Lassonde@Brown.edu; 401-863-6244). There will be no weekly email next Friday.

Enjoy your holiday!
