Resumed Undergraduate Education Program

Each year, a small number of students who have been out of high school for six years or more but who have not yet completed a four-year bachelor’s degree are admitted to Brown through the Resumed Undergraduate Education Program (RUE). RUE students begin their study at Brown at points anywhere from semester one to semester five, depending on the amount of transfer credit, if any, they present at the time of application. A maximum of four semesters of credit may be transferred to Brown.

Each RUE student is assigned an academic advisor who assists in planning a course of study that will lead to degree completion. Because RUE students often have full-time jobs or family obligations, Brown may grant them permission to study part-time and live off-campus.

Eligibility

RUE candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Their last work in high school was completed at least six years prior to the semester for which they seek admission to Brown.
  • They have not matriculated to Brown as a full-time student before applying through the RUE program. Students who have previously matriculated to Brown should contact the Dean of the College’s Office concerning re-admission.

Candidates eligible for the RUE Program may instead apply to Brown through the first-year or transfer application processes, depending on their individual circumstances, but may only submit one application (first-year, transfer, or RUE) in a given academic year.

RUE applicants who are U.S. citizens and eligible to enter Brown as first year students will be considered on a need-blind basis. RUE applicants who have completed academic work at the college level are considered transfer applicants and will be evaluated on a need-aware basis, as is the case for all transfer applicants to Brown.

Osher Reentry Scholarships and the RUE Program

The Osher Reentry Scholarships were made possible by a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation. The grant is designed to provide scholarship support towards tuition and fees for students pursuing their first baccalaureate degree after a significant break in their studies (a minimum 5 year cumulative gap) and who anticipate participation in the workforce for a significant period of time subsequent to graduation. Students in the University’s Resumed Undergraduate Education (RUE) program, who have demonstrated financial need and receive University Scholarship, and meet Osher Reentry Scholarship Program Guidelines will be considered to receive up to $5,000 for the academic year in the Osher Reentry Scholarship. Beyond the application for Financial Aid, no separate application is required for consideration. (Per Osher Reentry Scholarship Programs guidelines, this scholarship is not intended for international students who are visiting the United States with the intention of returning to their countries of origin after graduation.)
