Global Independent Studies

Application Deadlines

  • Fall Term: April 15, 2009
  • Spring Term: November 1, 2009

Beginning in fall 2009, Brown students studying abroad have the option of crafting a global independent study with a Brown faculty member. Students accepted to this program work with faculty who have teaching or research experience in their proposed overseas study destination. Together, the student and the faculty member develop a project proposal that is an integral part of the student’s study abroad curriculum and that, where possible, is connected to the student’s concentration. Project proposals are submitted to the College Curriculum Council for review. Upon successfully completing the global independent study project, students receive one Brown credit. The remainder of the student’s course load abroad is taken through the study abroad sponsor institution.

A global independent study has the potential to serve as the catalyst for continued research in the student’s chosen topics once he or she returns to Brown. This research may take the form of UTRA awards, continued collaboration with the faculty sponsor, or as the chosen theme for a senior capstone project or honors thesis. In this way, a global study project can infuse an international perspective into a student’s remaining time at Brown and develop the global competencies necessary to access and negotiate decisions in the global marketplace of ideas.
