Midyear Completion Celebration

Since 1989, Brown University has sponsored a Midyear Completion Celebration for students expecting to complete degree requirements in December. Usually scheduled on the first Saturday of the month, the event provides students an opportunity to celebrate their achievements with family and friends in an intimate, relaxed setting. The Dean of the College presides over the ceremony; the reception following the ceremony is hosted by the President of the University. The event features ceremonial music, speeches by two students, and a brief talk by a member of the faculty. Each student is called to the stage to receive a memento and a letter of congratulations from the President. Academic regalia is not worn for this event.

Students completing their degree requirements midyear are issued their diplomas in May of the following calendar year. They may attend the May commencement preceding the December of their degree completion or the May commencement after the December of their completion.

Video from the December 2012 ceremony is available below. James Valles, Professor of Physics served as the faculty speaker, and Emily Hurt and Michael Mount, two Midyear completers, served as student speakers.

In 2013 the Midyear Celebration will take place on Saturday, December 7 at 4:00 pm in the Salomon Center for Teaching, De Ciccio Family Auditorium. A reception will follow immediately in Sayles Hall. For additional information, please contact the Associate Dean of the College for Research and Upperclass Studies, Besenia Rodriguez.
