Academic Advising

The success of Brown’s open curriculum rests on the strength of our academic advisors, who help students define their academic pathways and shape their educational goals. Together with academic deans and peer advisors, faculty advisors help students to see their four years at Brown as an intellectual exploration in and out of the classroom.

Opportunities for advising occur almost any time faculty and students come together—in class, in the lab, during office hours, at departmental events or other extracurricular activities. Brown’s formal advising program provide the most structured forms of support for our students. Faculty serving as advisors for first-year and sophomore students are encouraged to explore the resources on this webpage designed for them. Concentration advisors will also find information that relates to their areas of interest.

If you are not currently serving as a first-year or second-year advisor and are interested in supporting our students in these advising programs, please contact Ann Gaylin or Carol Cohen, the Associate Deans for First-Year and Sophomores Studies. For information about concentration advising, please contact Besenia Rodriguez, the Associate Dean for Upperclass Studies.
