Performance Development and Planning Cycle (PDP)

Overview

Staff performance and institutional values combine to make Brown University one of the unique and esteemed universities in the nation.  The University must continue its commitment to attract, develop and retain the best staff.

Supervisors are expected to manage performance by having ongoing conversations during the year with staff. The conversations should provide timely, balanced, and constructive feedback. Supervisors are strongly encouraged to focus on inspiring, mentoring, developing, coaching and achieving higher levels of performance for all staff.

Critical to the PDP Cycle are the following:

  • Align individual jobs and individual/department goals to support the mission and, Plan for Academic Enrichment (PAE)
  • Identify future goals for personal and career growth
  • Improve job understanding and skills for all staff
  • Provide staff with an expectation of job responsibilities
  • Provide supervisor's with an expectation of how to manage performance
  • Reward and recognize all staff

In the PDP Appraisal Form, please provide staff with feedback including specific comments (e.g., examples) that describe performance. Supervisors should include comments describing expectations for staff. The development of all staff will support the overall success of the office, department, and University.
