Merrill W. Sherman


Merrill W. Sherman is the president and CEO of Bank Rhode Island. A former corporate lawyer and CEO of two New England banks, Sherman was a driving force in the creation of Bank Rhode Island, the second largest de novo bank in American history and the fourth largest bank in the greater Providence metropolitan area. For the first 17 years of her career, Sherman worked at the law firm of Hinckley, Allen & Snyder in Providence. She left in 1991 to join Eastland Financial Corporation where she served as executive vice president and general counsel and later as chairman and CEO. In September 1993, Sherman joined Brown, Rudnick, Freed & Gesmer, a 120-lawyer New England law firm, until she resigned in order to devote herself full time to the creation of Bank Rhode Island.
