Howard Foundation at Brown announces 1998-99 grant winners

Eleven writers and poets from colleges and universities throughout the country have received 1998-99 fellowships from the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation, administered by Brown University.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation, administered by Brown University, has announced 11 fellowships of $20,000 each for the 1998-99 academic year. The winners, all from the creative writing field, were selected from among 150 scholars nominated by administrative officers of colleges, universities and cultural institutions throughout the country. Among this year's winners is Peter Gale Nelson, assistant director of Brown's graduate Creative Writing Program.

The 1998-99 fellows and their projects are:

• John Gregory Brown, fiction, associate professor, Sweet Briar College: The Inventor's Mistress: A Novel
• Pearl Cleage, playwriting, lecturer, Spelman College: Ernesto's Eyes: A Play in Two Acts
• Jennifer C. Cornell, fiction, assistant professor, Oregon State University: Versus: A Collection of Short Stories
• Jean T. Day, poetry, independent: Enthusiasm: Odes & Stories, a book of poems and prose poems
• Peter Gizzi, poetry, assistant professor, University of California-Santa Cruz: Father Rome: A Narrative of Italian American Immigration
• Shelley Jackson, fiction, independent: Push Me Pull You: A Novel
• Donald Judson, fiction, independent: holy sonnet in 13 parts (a novel)
• Peter Gale Nelson, poetry, Brown University: Thin Film Facility
• Melissa Pritchard, fiction, assistant professor, Arizona State University: Her Last Man: Stories and a Novella
• Marjorie Welish, poetry, adjunct associate professor, Pratt Institute: Delight and/or Instruct

The Board of Administration for the Howard Foundation has announced that the 1999-2000 fellowships will be awarded in the fields of literary criticism, film criticism and translations into English.
