In May 1990, Vartan Gregorian, Brown's 16th president, climbed aboard a backhoe and dug the ceremonial first bit of ground for a new dormitory. Eight years later, returning for Brown's 230th Commencement as president emeritus, Gregorian learned that the new quadrangle would be named in his honor.
