Two selection committees led the search for Brown’s 18th president

The trustees and fellows of the Brown Corporation have selected Brown presidents for more than two centuries. The Brown Charter of 1764 specifically charges them with that responsibility.

The Brown Charter of 1764 charges members of the Brown Corporation with the selection of the president. In practice, the Corporation’s selection committee worked jointly with an advisory committee of faculty, students and staff. The Corporation committee, chaired by the chancellor, included:

The campus advisory committee included five faculty members appointed by the Faculty Executive Committee; one medical faculty member appointed by the Medical Faculty Executive Committee; two administrators, one appointed by the president and the other by the Staff Advisory Committee; one graduate student appointed by the Graduate Student Council; one medical student appointed by the Medical Student Senate; and three undergraduate students appointed by the Undergraduate Council of Students:
