For more than six decades yours has been a voice of reason in a troubled world. Present at the founding of the United Nations in 1946, you have served that institution with valor and virtue. As Undersecretary-General you witnessed humanity’s most tragic conflicts, offering innocent victims hope in the future. Toto animo desideras vicum globalem (sive anglice Global Village) salviorem fieri. Numquam desinuisti pacem omnium petere et inopiam viris mulieribus liberisque depellere. Imprisoned for more than sixteen years for daring to speak on behalf of democratic reform, you are a beacon of hope for young people in your homeland. Once, unable to leave your cell to give your daughter a birthday gift, you wrote the following words: “I think that in a person’s life, there should be some traits that sustain the person through the whole of his life, namely, righteousness, kindness, and affection toward others.” You have always exhibited those traits, even toward those who oppressed you. For your inspirational work and words, and your great personal sacrifice, Brown University is proud to honor you as a most gracious and courageous Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Has virtutes tu semper praestitisti, inimicis tuis non exceptis. In huius testimonium hoc diploma tibi laetissime do.
