Brown Names Michael Goldberger Athletic Director
Michael Goldberger, currently Brown University’s director of admission, will become the University’s new athletic director on July 1, 2005. PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons announced today that Michael Goldberger, long-time director of admission at Brown University, will become the University’s next director of athletics. Goldberger will begin his new duties July 1, 2005, succeeding David Roach and Interim Director of Athletics Joan Taylor.  Brown’s new athletic director “For more than 30 years Mike Goldberger has served the University – particularly prospective students, athletes and their families – with integrity, effectiveness and personal warmth,” Simmons said. “His excellent relationships with alumni, students, faculty, staff, coaches and athletes make him an ideal candidate and I am delighted that he has agreed to serve as director of athletics.” The appointment as athletic director brings Goldberger back to his point of entry at the University. He came to Brown in 1973 as an assistant coach for football and baseball, recruited to the staff by John Anderson, Brown’s new head football coach. Goldberger had played three seasons for Anderson when Anderson was a coach at Middlebury College. In 1981, Goldberger became an assistant to John Parry, Brown’s athletic director, serving as athletic liaison to the admission office, among other duties.  Experience in coaching After 10 years in athletics, Goldberger moved to the College Admission Office, where he would serve for 22 years. He began as associate director in 1983 and was named director in 1995. Brown’s applicant pool expanded steadily during his tenure. “Mike Goldberger has demonstrated how successful he can be in the most competitive area of the Ivy League – admissions,” said David Greene, vice president for campus life and student services, to whom the athletic director reports. “His competitive spirit and his deep concern for the experience of all students is the perfect combination for success as Brown’s athletic director.” As athletic director, Goldberger will be in charge of a 120-member athletic staff, supporting a varsity sports program that includes 37 intercollegiate teams (20 for women and 17 men) and more than 900 varsity athletes. An additional 250 student athletes participate in intercollegiate sports at the club level, and more than 3,000 students take part in year-round intramural programs. The department also offers physical education classes that involve more than 2,700 students, faculty and staff. Goldberger’s appointment follows a national search by a committee whose members included Luiz Valente, associate professor of Portuguese and Brazilian studies and comparative literature (chair); Paul Armstrong, dean of the College; Nancy Barnett, assistant professor (research) of psychiatry and human behavior and chair of the Faculty Committee on Athletics and Physical Education; Bethany Bradley, graduate student representative on the Faculty Committee on Athletics; Will Burroughs, Class of 2005 and co-chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Council; Elizabeth Huidekoper, executive vice president for finance and administration; Elvina Kung, Class of 2005 and co-chair of the Student Athlete Advisory Council; Kevin Mundt, Class of 1976 and chair of the Advisory Council on Athletics; Margaret (Digit) Murphy, head coach of women’s hockey; Mike Noonan, head coach of men’s soccer; and Ken O’Keefe, Class of 1976, a Brown trustee and president of the Sports Foundation Board of Directors. ###### News Service Home | Top of File | e-Subscribe | Brown Home Page | ||||
