For Brown Students on Financial Aid
All students eligible for financial aid (with few exceptions) may use their aid for an approved program of study abroad.
Your aid award will be based on the program's budget, including airfare and living costs. You will be eligible for grants and loans as if you were on campus, with the exception of Federal Work Study (FWS). The normal FWS component of an aid package will be covered with additional loan funds, upon request. Please note, that the amount of scholarship awarded for study abroad can vary depending on the program's cost.
You must follow all the normal Financial Aid Guidelines and fill out all forms as you normally would each year at Brown. If you will not be on Brown's campus during the spring semester, you must request an early release of your loan forms and sign them before you depart the US.
In addition to the regular aid forms, there are special steps for studying abroad. The information and forms you need for applying your financial aid to study abroad are below. Please consult the Office of Financial Aid for further information.

- The Refund Request Form is required for all students.
- The Consortium Agreement section of this form is only required for some Alternative Programs. Consult a Financial Aid Advisor or the active Consortium Agreements List for more information.
- Brown Program Budgets are available within the Cost Information pages.
Additional Study Abroad Funding
First, do not plan with the idea that you will find work abroad. Most countries do not allow visiting students to work for pay. A few countries will allow you to work, but there is NO guarantee of finding a job.
That said, there are a number of alternative funding sources both within and outside the university. Funding sources around Brown include:
- Watson Institute Fellowships
- Swearer Center Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards
- Dean of the College's Listing of Undergraduate Fellowships, Internships, and Research Awards
The OIP is currently updating its listing of Fellowships, Internships, and Research Awards. In the meantime please review the sites listed above and the additional sources outside of the university listed below.
