UC110: The Presidential Seminar -- "Moments of Inclusion at Brown University"
Application For Fall 2002 (Due April 30th)
On behalf of President Ruth Simmons, I cordially invite you to consider enrolling in the Presidential Seminar (UC 110) next fall. Limited to 15 students and with the participation of Peter Hocking, Director of the Swearer Center for Public Service, the course will cover questions of general consideration to higher education: individuality vs. commitment to community, the nature of liberal education, and the issue of hate speech vs. open speech. It will also explore and research questions of inclusion at Brown University from the post World War II era to the present, focusing on the issues of race and class. Using archival materials and oral histories, we hope eventually to produce a more nuanced history of Brown. Students will do research projects of their own choosing, guided by previous research on these topics.
In order for us to best understand your interest in the course and select the students for next semester, please respond, in no more than two pages, to the following questions:
- Discuss briefly what you value most here at Brown.
- How will this course contribute to the development of new knowledge and skills that would be applicable to your experience at Brown and beyond?
- VERY IMPORTANT: Please also include your concentration, your intended year of graduation, and your e-mail address.
Please deliver all submissions to Professor Kenneth Sacks as either a Word attachment in an e-mail to Kenneth_Sacks@brown.edu or in hard-copy form to the Department of History, Box N, Green House 206 by April 30th. You will be notified sometime in early May by e-mail.
