About the Department

 

The Brown Department of Public Safety is a fully-accredited police department through the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), which administers a rigorous accreditation process whereby law enforcement agencies must adhere to over 440 standards, codes and state-of-the-art practices.

The Department of Public Safety is a full-service Law Enforcement Agency that provides a wide array of police and public safety services to the Brown Community. DPS is comprised of two major divisions:

The Police and Law Enforcement Division, which is our largest division,is primarily responsible for the safety and security of the entire campus community. This division consists of 80 members who are responsible for crime deterrence, crime investigation, dignitary protection, emergency response and handling routine calls for service. Our police and security officers patrol Brown's campus by foot, bicycle and vehicle 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The division's sworn police officers are required to attend a state certified police academy and are also licensed as RI Special State Police Officers. All sworn officers are authorized to enforce state statutes and University rules and regulations. All of our sworn police officers are armed.

Security officers are also authorized to enforce University rules and regulations.

Our Administrative Services Division is responsible for the strategic and fiscal planning, building security technology, community relations and outreach for the department.

The Administrative Services Division is also responsible for administering the University's building access and security systems. All residence halls require card access and are equipped with door alarms. When exterior doors are propped open or access is gained illegally, and alarm is generated.

The Community Relations and Outreach Bureau coordinates safety and educational programs for members of the community, as well as provides crime victim support and advocacy.

The Brown Department of Public Safety staffs and operates a 24 hour state-of-the-art Dispatch Communication Center. The Center handles all emergency and non-emergency calls for service at the University and dispatches officer via a state-wide 800 MHz Radio System.

The phone number to the DPS Communications Center is 863-3322 and TDD number is 863-1740. It is open and staffed by Communication Control Officers 24 hours a day. Department headquarters are located at 75 Charlesfield Street. These administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year, and 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. during the summers session.
