Crime Alert – Robbery

May 14, 2013

 The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of a robbery that occurred near the intersection of Waterman Street and Governor Street.

 Incident:

On Monday, May 13, 2013 at approximately 8.15 p.m. Brown University Department of Public Safety was notified by the victim of a robbery.  The incident took place at the intersection of  Waterman Street and Governor Street.  The victim, not affiliated with the University, was approached by two suspects. One of the suspects took the victims cell phone.  Both suspects then fled on foot.West on Waterman St. This incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department.and Brown University Department of Public Safety.

Suspect:

Suspect #1: Was described as a light to medium skin male  wearing dark clothing with a hooded sweatshirt.

Suspect #2:  Is described as a male  wearing dark clothing.

CRIME ALERT – ROBBERY

January 30, 2013

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the community of a robbery that occurred on Tuesday, January, 29, 2013.

INCIDENT

On Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at approximately 10 PM, a Brown University student was standing in front of 155 George Street when she was grabbed from behind and robbed of her tote bag that contained assorted items. The three suspects were observed entering a red mini van that fled south on Brook Street.

SUSPECTS

Suspect #1: Described as a dark skinned male, 20-25 years of age, 5’10”, thin build, wearing a black sweatshirt with a hood.

Suspect #2: Described as a dark skinned male, 20-25, thin build.

Suspect #3: Described as a dark skinned female, with long straight dark colored hair, wearing a grey sweatshirt.

Suspect #4: male unknown description.

This incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety.

CRIME ALERT – ROBBERY / ARREST

January 27, 2013

The Brown University Department of Public Safety (DPS) would like to notify the community of a robbery and apprehension that occurred on Sunday, January 27, 2013.

INCIDENT

On Sunday, January 27, 2013, at approximately 4:46 am, a Brown University student was walking down the walkway between Miller and Alumni Hall when he was approached by three males.  One of the males displayed a knife and the other showed a crowbar.  The student was then assaulted and robbed of his personal belongings.  The suspects then fled toward Meeting Street.

Shortly after the incident, Brown University Police stopped a vehicle on Lloyd Avenue near Brook Street containing four males matching the description given by the victim.  The suspects were positively identified as being responsible for the assault and robbery and were then arrested.

SAFETY INFORMATION

As a reminder, DPS encourages all members of the community to continue to be vigilant and proactive in maximizing their personal safety. Report any and all suspicious person(s), vehicle(s), or activity to DPS at 863-3322.

Utilize Safewalk and SafeRIDE Services to navigate around campus. Late at night, when SafeRide is not in operation, members of the community are encouraged to contact DPS at 863-3322 for a safety escort.

Crime Alert – Assault/Attempted Robbery

 December 17, 2012

 The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of an assault and attempted robbery that occurred this evening, Monday, December 17, 2012, at approximately 6:30 p.m., near the intersection of Power Street and Governor Street.

 INCIDENT:

A Brown University student while walking near the intersection of Power Street and Governor Street was assaulted in an attempt to rob him of his personal belongings by two suspects.   The suspects then fled on foot northbound on Governor Street.  

SUSPECTS:  The male suspects are described as average height and build, wearing black sweatshirts, with a hood, tan pants, approximately 20 years old.    

The incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety

Crime Alert – Assault 

December 5, 2012 

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of an assault that occurred last evening on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at approximately 11:00 p.m., near the intersection of Meeting Street and Brown Street. This incident was reported to DPS Wednesday evening, December 5, 2012.

 INCIDENT:

A Brown University student while walking near the intersection of Brown Street and Meeting Street was approached by an unknown male who grabbed the victim from behind. The unidentified male then fled down Olive Street.

 SUSPECT: The male suspect is approximately six feet tall, in his 30’s, wearing dark colored clothing and dark baseball cap.   

The incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety

Crime Alert – Assault and Arrest

October 12, 2012

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of an assault and arrest. The incident occurred on Thursday October 11th, 2012 at approximately 11:10 p.m., near the intersection of Waterman Street and Brown Street.

 INCIDENT

A Brown University student while walking near the intersection of Brown Street and Waterman Street was approached by two unknown males asking for directions. The student was assaulted by the two suspects who then fled the area. A knife was used during the assault and the victim received non-life threatening injuries. The suspects were apprehended by the Brown University Police and were identified as being responsible for the assault. Both suspects were formerly charged with felony assault.

 The incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety

Crime Advisory – Cell Phone Robbery and Arrest

September 23, 2012

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the community of several cell phone robberies and apprehension, occurring on September 22, 2012.

Incident

On Saturday, September 22, 2012 at approximately 11:10 pm, Brown University and Providence Police responded to four separate cell phone robbery incidents, in the areas of Thayer Street, Brook Street and George Street. The victims of each incident reported that they were approached by three male suspects who robbed them of their cell phones and then fled in a dark colored vehicle. Brown University and Providence Police Officers were able to stop the vehicle and apprehend the suspects. Police were able to recover the stolen phones through a tracking device in one of the stolen cell phones.

Safety Information

As a reminder, many crimes of opportunity occur by suspects taking advantage of individuals distracted by or talking on their cell phones.  DPS encourages all members of the Community to continue to be vigilant and proactive in maximizing their personal safety – talking or texting on your cell phone or listening to music with headphones will make you less aware of your surroundings.  Please report any suspicious behavior by person(s) or vehicle(s) to DPS at 863-4111.

Safety Tips

1. Download or install property recovery applications that are available for your cell phone.

2. Use caution when walking with your cell phone and pay attention to your surroundings.

3. If wearing ear buds, keep the volume to a minimum so that you can hear what is going on around you.

Crime Advisory – Robbery Incident & Reported Burglaries

August 14, 2012

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the community of a recent robbery and several reported burglaries in the Governor Street and George Street area.

Recent Incident:

On Friday, August 10, 2012, at approximately 10:54 p.m., a male victim while walking on George Street was assaulted and robbed of his personal belongings. The suspect(s) then fled the area in an unknown direction.
In light of these recent incidents, we urge all members of the Brown University community to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to DPS at 863-4111.

Crime Advisory – Arrest

June 16, 2012

The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the community of a robbery and apprehension of the suspect's, occurring on June 16, 2012 at approximately 01:06 a.m.

Incident: 

On Saturday, June 16, 2012 at approximately 01:06 a.m., two Brown University student's while walking on Power Street, near the intersection of Ives Street were approached by three male suspect's, one of the suspect's displayed a hand-gun and demanded the student's personal belongings. The suspect's then fled in a dark green mini-van heading west on Power Street.  The suspect's vehicle registration was observed by a Brown University police officer.  The three suspect's were later apprehended and positively identified as being responsible for the robbery.

Crime Alert – Robbery

June 3, 2012

 The Brown University Department of Public Safety would like to notify the Community of a robbery that occurred at Governor Street and Manning Street.

INCIDENT

On Sunday, June 3, 2012, at approximately 9:30 pm, a male Brown University student was near the intersection of Governor Street and Manning Street when he was approached by two males.  One of the male suspects displayed a hand gun and demanded the victims wallet.  The male victim handed the suspects his personal belongings.  The suspects were last seen fleeing the area on foot in a Easterly direction on Manning Street, towards Governor Street.

SUSPECTS

Suspect #1: Is described as a male approximately 19 – 20 years of age, medium build and wearing a white tee-shirt and blue jeans.

Suspect #2: Is described as a male approximately 19 – 20 years of age, medium build and wearing dark clothing.

This incident is under investigation by the Providence Police Department and the Brown University Department of Public Safety.
