Public Safety for Events

If you are anticipating more than 100 people to attend your event, you must request security with Brown Public Safety (M-F, 7 AM-3 PM). Please keep in mind that adequate time for planning is required: events must be registered at least 2 weeks in advance (3 weeks is required for events with alcohol or where more than 300 people are expected).

The following factors will be considered when deciding how many officers are necessary:

  • Size of the crowd expected
  • Location of event
  • Whether or not money is being collected for admission
  • Whether or not alcohol service is available
  • Type of event (i.e., public invited/only Brown community)

  • The minimum time for which a police officer may be contracted is four hours; additionally, any event that requires three officers must have a sergeant present. Events open to the public may also require Providence Police Officer, who will be responsible for dispersing people who cannot be admitted and are congregating around the venue. The police detail will arrive one-half hour before the event starts to confer with the responsible students as to their posting. Brown officers will assist the organization in the general maintenance of good order and respond to emergencies. The detail will leave one-half hour after the event has ended.Keep in mind that event coordinators should introduce themselves to the officer at the event.
