New Faculty Orientation

In conjunction with the Dean of the Faculty, the Sheridan Center offers new faculty an introduction to teaching at Brown and campus resources. The orientation is held the week before classes begin.

New Teaching Assistant Orientation

In conjunction with the Graduate School, the Sheridan Center offers an orientation for first-time Teaching Assistants. Designed to compliment departmental TA training, the orientation introduces new TAs to the Brown curriculum and to teaching resources available on campus, and provides participants with the opportunity to discuss their roles and responsibilities as TAs with experienced TAs and with faculty.

Teaching at Brown: From A to Z lists key campus resources for instructors new to teaching at Brown and explains terms unique to Brown. Topics include Getting Started, Classes & the Curriculum, Campus Resources and the Brown Administration.

Teaching at Brown: A Handbook for Faculty, Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows provides an introduction to teaching at Brown, a summary of research on teaching and learning, an overview of various pedagogical techniques and forms of assessment, a discussion of teaching to diversity, and suggestions for evaluating and improving teaching.

Twenty Tips - Some Hints on How to Be an Effective TA, prepared by Prof. Jan Tullis (Geological Sciences), contains many excellent suggestions.
