Rebuilding Together 2007
The day in Providence was pleasant and spring-like, but to the 50 or so Brown University staff and students volunteering that Saturday, nothing warmed the heart as much as the faces of those who benefited from their work. Held this year on April 28th, National Rebuilding Day is a nationwide effort of Rebuilding Together, a non-profit organization with a mission to “preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly and disabled and families with children, live in warmth, safety and independence.” To that end, the Providence affiliate of Rebuilding Together asked Brown’s group of volunteers to help rehabilitate Bannister House.
Founded in 1890, Bannister House is a non-profit skilled nursing facility currently located at 135 Dodge Street in Providence. The four-story building, which provides a home and long-term care to approximately 95 residents, was in need of refurbishing.
In March, the President’s Staff Advisory Committee began recruiting individuals from the Brown community to give their time on National Rebuilding Day. By April 28th, 50 people answered the call, including, for the first time, 15 students. Among this latter group were six from the Brown University student chapter of Engineers without Borders. Joining the 50 volunteers from Brown were ten employees of Bannister House. All were supervised by site captains John Colarusso and Gary Martins from Facilities Management.
To start the day right, the group enjoyed scrumptious pastries, fruit, coffee, and juice in the lobby of Bannister House. Kindly supplied by Brown Dining Services, breakfast was followed a few hours later by a hearty boxed lunch.
With full stomachs, warm hearts, and great enthusiasm, the volunteers went to work. Some grabbed paint rollers to tackle large sections of wall, while others chose a brush for precise trim-work. Rakes, hoes, hammers, and saws were other tools of the day.
By the end of that Saturday, Bannister House had been transformed. Hallways and alcoves shimmered with fresh coats of paint; the chapel had been brightened with a new ceiling and light fixtures; nurses’ stations had new countertops. Outside, flowers and a clean lawn cheerfully welcomed visitors.
This is a story of renewal, camaraderie, and enthusiastic service. We hope to see you next April at Rebuilding Together 2008. (Posted 6/07)
Brown Worker Appreciation Days
On Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26, members of the President's Staff Advisory Committee (SAC) participated in the Undergraduate Student Council's (USC) "Brown Worker Appreciation Days." SAC members and USC students distributed buttons to students in Faunce House and on the Main Green.
Students were asked to give the buttons to Brown workers who have had a positive influence on them. Some students already knew about the buttons and were glad to take a handful back to their departments; others had not heard about the event and stopped by our Bear Hug Tables to learn more.
It was an exciting event with lots of positive interaction among students and staff. Thanks to everyone who participated this year. (Posted 5/07)
