APRIL 2013

April 4, 7:00 pm (Washington, D.C.): The Women's Leadership Council and the Pembroke Center Associates presented "Brown Women in Foreign Policy", hosted by Women's Leadership Council Co-Chair Shelley N. Fidler '68, P'09, in collaboration with Nancy L. Buc '65 LLD'94 hon. and Melanie Y. Nakagawa '02. The panel discussion featured: Heather Hurlburt '89, Mariah Sixkiller '99, and Meghan Stewart '00.

April 4, 6:30 pm (New York City): Women's Leadership Council member Marcia Dunn, M.D. ’82 hosted a special cocktail reception with Brown University President Christina Paxson. The reception took place in the Johnston Room at the NoMad Hotel.

April 3, 5:30 pm (Providence, RI):  The Pembroke Center presented the Elizabeth Munves Sherman ’77, P’06, P’09 Lecture in Gender and Sexuality Studies sponsored by Women’s Leadership Council member and Pembroke Center Associates Council member Liz Sherman ’77, P’06, P’09.  The first of an annual lecture series was presented by Professor Karen Newman.   Professor Newman, the Owen Walker Professor of Humanities and Professor of Comparative Literature, discussed ‘Is there a future in the past’:Eventails de Bosse, early modern engraving and the Judgment of Paris.”

March 27, 7:00 pm (Washington, D.C.): Women's Leadership Council Co-Chair Shelley N. Fidler '68, P'09, in collaboration with Caitie Whelan '07 and Mariah Sieber Sixkiller '99, welcomed young alumnae from the DC area to a cocktail reception to discuss "Fresh Ideas about Work-Life Balance."

March 21, 6:30 pm (San Francisco, CA): The Women's Leadership Council and the Pembroke Center Associates presented "Brown Women and the field of Technology", hosted by Women's Leadership Council member Mary Vascellaro '74, P'07. The panel discussion featured: Brynna Donn '91, Director Corporate Applications, Portals and Collaboration; Jill A. Huchital '89, Head of Engineering, InVisioneer; Nancy E. Pfund P'14, Managing Partner, DBL Investors; and was moderated by Jessica Lessin, News Editor and Senior Technology Reporter, the Wall Street Journal.

March 14, 5:45 pm (Chicago, IL): Women's Leadership Council members Donna Erickson Williamson '74 and Nancy Gidwitz '70 brought the celebration of 120 Years of Women at Brown to Chicago when they hosted an event for "Brown Women through the Decades." Alumnae from a variety of class years joined together to share their thoughts and perspectives on Brown and Pembroke, and compare stories from their days as undergraduates.

March 13, 6:00 pm (Providence, RI):  The Women’s Leadership Council, in association with the Pembroke Center Associates, the Sarah Doyle Women’s Center, the Brown Alumni Association, and the Brown Club of Rhode Island, celebrated Women’s History Month with a special event featuring the groundbreaking documentary MAKERS:  Women Who Make America. Highlights from the documentary were shown, followed by a panel discussion with the following women involved in the MAKERS project:

  • Marika Shioiri-Clark ’05, Inaugural Year Global Resident, IDEO.org and Principal, SOSHL Studio
  • Barbara Smith, Author, Activist, and Independent Scholar

JANUARY 2013

January 17, 4:30 pm (Naples, FL): Council member Judith Hushon ’67, P’93 hosted a reception and screening of MAKERS: Women Who Make America. This documentary, produced by alumna Betsy West ’73, features the largest and most dynamic collection of women’s stories ever assembled including the story of Brown’s 18th President Ruth J. Simmons.

Attendees' experiences spanned generations, stretching back to women during World War II.

January 15, 6:00 pm (Boston, MA): Council member Sandee Ting Simshauser '84 hosted the first Boston Women's Launch Pad Winter Gathering. The event was open to all current and past Mentees and Mentors to meet other Brown graduates and students of the mentoring program living and/or working in the Boston metro area.

January 10, 6:30 pm (New York, NY): Council member Sue Buffum ’74 hosted the fourth New York Women's Launch Pad Winter Gathering. November 13 (Providence, RI): Council member Judith Danforth ’77, P’06 and her husband Murray ’77, P’06, continued their 10+ year tradition of hosting a dinner in their home for a few Brown students. This year’s gathering included three children of current Council members and three Women’s Launch Pad mentees.

November 13 (Chicago, IL): In partnership with Women's Leadership Council member and Brown Chicago Women's Network co-founder Donna C.E. Williamson '74, alumna Anne Loucks '87 hosted an event at her gallery for Chicago-area alumnae featuring Katherine Bergeron ADE'05, Dean of the College, who spoke about 'Women, Leadership, and the Future of Brown'.

November 8 (New York City): On behalf of the Women's Leadership Council (WLC) and Women's Launch Pad (WLP), Council member Marcia Dunn '82 and WLP Mentor Vicky Oliver '82 provided an opportunity for a number of former WLP mentees in the New York metro area to attend Professor Barbara Tannebaum's P'10 sold out presentation 'Secrets of Persuasive Communication', sponsored by the Brown Club of New York.

OCTOBER 2012

October 19 (Providence, RI): Members of the Women's Leadership Council gathered on College Hill for their fall meeting to celebrate the Council's past success and discuss plans for future initiatives. The Council was joined by President Paxson during lunch where she shared her vision for Brown and some of the University's key priorities.


October 18 (Providence, RI): Nearly 200 alumnae and students attended the Women's Launch Pad Kickoff, which featured a training offered by Karen Hoffman '83, P'13, Principal of DKS Consulting Group, and her partners Sharon O'Connor and Dale Sokoloff, entitled Practical Tips for a Successful Mentoring Relationship. The training was followed by dinner where attendees heard from President Paxson and alumna Morra Aarons-Mele '98, founder of the digital marketing agency Women Online, and its online marketing network The Mission List, who spoke about the importance of 'Composing the Life You Want'.

April 18 (Naples, FL): The Women's Leadership Council and the Brown University Club of Southwest Florida sponsored "A Birthday Lunch" celebrating 120 years of women at Brown hosted by Council Member Judy Hushon Ph.D.'67, P'93. Brown Alumnae ranging from 1948-1995 attended and reminisced about their time on College Hill. Although they were unable to return to campus for the Women's Leadership Conference in May, they were thrilled to be able to take part in the celebrations on a local level!

February 7 (New York, NY): Graduates of the Last Decade $1 Million Challenge Party. The Brown Annual Fund invited the classes of 2002 to 2011 to a cocktail reception with members of the Women's Leadership Council, sponsors of the $1 million GOLD challenge.

Tillinghast Jr. '32 Professor of International Studies and Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Pembroke Center, David Waskow '88, Program Director for Oxfam America, and moderator Jasmine Waddell '99, Visiting Lecturer of Sustainable International Development at Brandeis University's Heller School for Social Policy and Management, about international development. Co-sponsored by the Women's Leadership Council.

March 3 (San Francisco, CA): Women's Leadership Council Executive Committee Member, Mary Vascellaro '74, P'07 hosted 50 women from the San Francisco area to hear a panel on Women and Technology. Theresia Ranzetta '90 was masterful at moderating and the panelists, Galyn Susman '86 of Pixar, Claire Johnson '94 of Google and Leah Perlman '04, who just left Facebook, spoken eloquently on everything from how Brown shaped their lives, the issues of being a woman in Silicon Valley, and the always present issues around child-rearing and the corporate life.
