Brown headed to Final Four!
Friday, April 18: Brown 50 - West Chester 12
In an aggressive and fast-paced game, Brown stood up to a hard-hitting West Chester side and a much larger scrum to easily advance to the round of 8 in this year's Collegiate Div. I Women's National Championships. Alex Goff of ERugbyNews.com wrote of the game: "Brown was clearly the class of the game, and looked cohesive and powerful as they look toward the quarterfinals."
Saturday, April 19: Brown 17 - UC Davis 12
Brown dominated a big UC Davis squad in the loose but had a hard time getting points on the board. Alex Hartley '10 got the scoring started 25 minutes in off a lineout to put Brown up 5-0. In the second half Emilie Bydwell '08 broke through for a 50 meter run, Katie Glerum converted and Brown led 12-0. Davis stormed back with 2 trys to tie the match with less then 5 minutes remaining. With a little over 2 minutes left Brown executed a beautiful multi-phase play off a lineout to win the match 17-12.
Brown will travel to Stanford in two weeks for the National Final Four. This is the first time in the team's 30-year history that the Brown women have ever made the semifinals!
Two-time Ivy Champions!
Brown outscored three Ivy opponents 145-0 to claim its second consecutive Ivy Championship. Playing on a beautiful, sunny day in front of a warm home crowd Brown easily outplayed Columbia, Cornell and Yale to win the title. Brown looks to capitalize on their Ivy momentum as they head to the National Sweet 16 Championships in Albuquerque, NM this weekend.
Brown rolls over Boston women.
Brown kicked off on yet another cold, windy, rainy day, but kept warm running all over Boston, a very competitive Division I women's club team. Final score: 67-0.
The Brown B's took on Roger Williams, last year's Division IV national champions. The B's played a hard phsyical match but left a number of tries unanswered, falling to the Hawks 40-10.
Wins over UVA, JMU in Virginia
Playing in front of a small but raucous UVA crowd, the team beat a tough UVA squad 20-10 this past weekend (UVA is currently ranked 7th in the country). Brown began the match facing a stiff wind and a hard hitting UVA 15, but the Brown forwards quickly took control of the game winning ball and set a fast pace. The Brown backs moved the ball well but the UVA backs held firm making hits and doing a nice job reorganizing their defense. Consistent pressure from both forwards and backs led Brown to a solid win. Later in the day, the Brown B's lost to the UVA B-side, but not without some beautiful play from a tough, young squad.
On Wednesday, Brown completely dominated a large JMU squad - winning handily, 69-0. The Brown handling was fantastic - every player was hitting the mark with confidence but in the end it was the pace that was just too much for JMU to handle.
Brown will face the #4 MARFU team in the first round of the National Sweet 16 this April. The club is still ranked 1st in the nation by ERugbyNews.com.
Brown Falls to Beantown
Brown ended the spring ‘preseason’ with a 5-32 loss to the Beantown Rugby Football Club. Beantown is one of the oldest and most esteemed women's clubs in the country; they placed second at the 2007 club championships. Beantown has won 5 national titles and currently boasts 6 US Eagles.
The match kicked off in an icy rain and was marvelous from the first touch. The hits were thunderous, the passing was crisp, and the runs inspiring.
he pace of the match was fast - much faster than a D1 college match. Great college players reorganize and attack very quickly, and as a result, Brown players were stretched. All the Beantown scores came off 2nd and 3rd phase ball, most often when Brown had to commit 2-3 players to the tackle.
Brown captains Keisha Carlson ‘08 and Yadi Ibarra ‘09 demonstrated great leadership exhorting their teammates through out the match and consistently leading by example – it was a very successful match day.
Brown B lost a hard fought match to Providence College. Led by captain Nina Karlson-Ayala ‘10, the B’s kicked off immediately following the A match. The match was a see-saw affair with Providence women prevailing. The B’s fought hard, however, and many of the first year players showed great promise – Susannah Kroeber ‘11, Virginia Buckles ‘11, Rebecca Romash ‘10, and Haley Jordahl ‘11 were outstanding in the match.
Brown Wins Spring Opener
The Brown women's rugby team opened the season Saturday afternoon with a 10-5 win over The Providence Women's Rugby Club. The match was played in a cold, driving rain which contributed to some handling challenges, but the bears shook off some early-season rust to emerge victorious, 10-5.
Brown B played well in the same rough conditions, denying Providence backs space to move - but Providence's experience was too much for a young Brown B-side and the match, called at 30 minutes due to weather, ended in a 10-5 Providence win. The bears will take on the Beantown Rugby Club next week in preparation for their college season.
Bydwell to Play with Senior U.S. Eagles
Congratulations to center Emilie Bydwell '08, who was selected to tour England with the Senior Women's National team in December!
The Eagles are in a financial crunch to finance this tour, where they will play the Nomads, England A, and England. This will be the only full national team activity for the WNT this year, and their first such games since the 2006 World Cup.
To fund the tour, the team is holding a raffle. Tickets are $10 apiece or 5 for $45. The grand prize is $500 cash, 1st prize is $300, and 2nd prize is $200.
If you would like to purchase a ticket, you can email Alex Williams (wntfwdcoach@gmail.com) with your name, how many tickets you want, whether you wish to support a specific player or the team in general, and whether you'd like to pay via paypal or by check. All money received in support of a particular player will be credited to that player, thus directly reducing her tour fee.
The drawing will be Friday, November 30 and winners will be notified by e-mail.
Good luck, Em!
Five Brown Players Selected to NRU U-19 Select Side
Katie Glerum '10, Alex Hartley '10, Alicia Hartley '10, Lee Kava '11, and Blaine Martin '11 all made the roster for this year's NRU U-19 Select Side, which will face off against seven other regional select sides this weekend at the U-19 National All-Star Championships in Tennessee. Congratulations and good luck!
2007 NRU Champions!
Winning tough matches against Cornell (26-10) and Vassar (36-27), Brown emerged from this weekend's NRU tournament as regional champions for the first time in the club's 30 year history. Brown is still ranked #1 in the country by ERugbyNews, and is looking forward to a spring season filled with tough contests, including the Ivy League Tournament and the USA Rugby Division I National championships, which Brown enters as the #5 seed.
Congratulations to the entire team for the hard work and support that produced such a dominant season!
Brown downs UMass, Army to sweep NERFU!
In driving rain and wind, Brown faced both a forward-heavy UMass and a tough Army squad yesterday at the NERFU playoffs in Amherst, MA, downing the Minutewomen 12-5 and the Cadets 10-0 to become the 2007 NERFU champions! Despite less than a 45-minute rest period between two hard-fought matches, the Brown women proved stronger and more tenacious than both opposing teams, crowning a season of victories with the team's second consecutive league championship.
The Bears will play Yale at home next weekend for top seeding in the NRU tournament, to be held November 10-11 at Bowdoin college in Brunswick, ME. The last time the Bears faced the Bulldogs, the Yale women came away smarting from a 70-12 loss.
Brown Is Number One!
Goff on Rugby has ranked Brown #1 in the country for Division 1 women's college teams. Goff writes: " Brown will enter the New England championships as one of the favorites. They have All American center Emilie Bydwell who has scored 100 points this season, while No. 8 Thalia Beaty, fullback Katie Glerum and captain and lock Keisha Carlson have all had strong seasons in a tough league." Brown faces UMass in the first round of the NERFU playoffs this weekend.
For more information, see Goff on Rugby (now ERugbyNews.com).
BWRFC Downs Providence
In an A-side and B-side sweep, Brown confirmed its complete dominance over the league, putting away Providence College's A's 36-15, and the B's 15-5. Brown plays off for the league championship next week. The bears are currently ranked 3rd in the nation for Division I.
2007 Conference Champions!
With wins over Dartmouth (34-0), Vassar (36-21), Harvard (57-0), and Yale (70-12), Brown emerged as the NERFU Division I Silver conference champion. Next week, Brown takes on local rivals Providence College in a cross-conference match before heading to playoffs.
Brown Finishes Strong at Beantown
With huge wins over Cornell, Boston College and the University of Massachusetts, Brown made it into the championship game of the 2007 Beantown Tournament this past weekend in Epping, NH. Despite losing a tough match to Army in the final, the team returned from the weekend feeling optimistic about what looks to be a very strong season for both the A and B sides. The B's tied with MIT B, lost a close game to St. Joseph's, and then won their consolation bracket in a well-played match against Northeastern B. A number of brand new players made their rugby debut, and veterans and rookies alike enjoyed Sunday's beautiful weather and the first rugby matches of the season.
The club is always looking for new players - if you're interested in giving rugby a try, feel free to e-mail Kalie Gold for more information.
Upcoming rookie clinic
BWRFC is always looking for new players. We will be holding a clinic during Freshman Orientation to introduce new players to the game. Absolutely NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY to play. Brown places 9th at Nationals
On April 20 we traveled to Penn State to compete in the National Division I round of sixteen tournament. We opened against fifth-ranked Navy and after a tough first 10 minutes, we found ourselves in a 0-24 hole. However we found our game and tripped up Navy's organization, scoring two unanswered tries. Unfortunately after a hard fought second half including three called back tries, the final score stood at Navy 41, Brown 10. Although the loss prevented us from advancing to the final four tournament, we beat UCSB 46-31 on Sunday. The win placed Brown 9th in the nation, the highest finish ever in the club's history.
Brown wins Ivy Tournament
On April 14th and 15th we hosted the Ivy tournament. Princeton drew first blood in our opening match but we came back with strong rucking to win 14-7. After trouncing Radcliffe 42-0 we faced Yale in the final match. It wouldn't be rugby without freezing rain and strong wind gusts but we prevailed 14-0 to become 2007 Ivy League Champions.

Brown will travel to Penn State this April 22-23 to compete in the Div. I National Sweet Sixteen.

2006 Ivies
Brown went up against Cornell in the first round of Ivies and showed great heart, but the pouring freezing rain and deep mud levelled the playing field so that neighter side could get out clean ball. The score was tied until late in second half when a series of Bruno handling mistakes landed Cornell in the try zone and Brown in the consolation bracket. The matches were cancelled for the rest of saturday. In sunday's sunny weather, Bruno turned it around against Columbia and played a nearly flawless match and breezed through with to meet Dartmouth in the consolation final. Dartmouth played hard, but they were consistently out-rucked and out-played by a superior Brown team.
B-side surprises Princeton A's
After Penn dropped out of the tournament, the Brown B-side was entered into the 8-team bracket to compete with the Ivy A-sides. In the first round, the B-side was up against first seeded Princeton, who opened with a mix of their A and B-side players. The B-side surprised everyone, however, when they held up Princeton and while Princeton pumped more and more of their A-side into the match for fear of being eliminated from the winner's bracket, the B-side continued to hold them off. The match went into overtime with both sides scoreless, and Bruno held off the nationally-ranked Princeton side until the last minute of the second overtime period. The b-side continued to play well, wearing down Darmouth and Columbia in the next two matches, ending the weekend without a win, but with great hope for the future of Brown Women's Rugby.
Brown V. Thunderbirds
Saturday began with a game of "Toto" touch between local children. That afternoon was the big match between Brown and the Ugandan national team, the Thunderbirds (previously unbeaten and unscored upon). The match began at 5:00pm, to the sounds and sight of a traditional dance group and hundreds of cheering fans. Both sides played exceptionally well. Both sides considered the match to be the most difficult in recent memory. Victory, went to Uganda, with a final score of 29-7. The Brown side was extremely excited about the outcome of the game considering the Ugandan's usually win by about 100 points. After the game the two teams shared a delicious Ugandan meal and an evening filled with dancing and celebration.
The Brown B-sde is currently focused ahead for Wednesday, the next match up between the two teams. The following weekend will include a sevens tournament with teams from Brown,Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Kenya.
Brown in Uganda
The Brown Women's Rugby team today completed its third day in the Ugandan capital of Kampala. The team departed from Providence on Wednesday afternoon and arrived in Kampala bright and early Friday morning. An afternoon practice gave the winter-weary players a brief chance to adjust to sports in the tropics before Saturday's match against the Ugandan national team. On Sunday the Brown players had the extremely generous and lucky fortune to relax in one of Uganda's premier resorts, Speke, where they swam in an enormous pool and ate incredible food all day. Today most of the team is adventuring to the head of the Nile to experience some of the most famous white water rafting in the world.

brown rolls over williams 65-0
after a tough start at the beantown tournament, brown bounced back with a great start to the regualr season,
defeating williams 65-0. hooker ariel thompson set the tone when she broke through on a punch and scored just a
couple minutes into the first half. flyhalf captain whitney brown led the back line in a fast pressure defense
causing williams to make mistakes on offense, and the speed and strong running of whitney and centers kelsey engelbrecht and
thalia beaty created huge holes in the defense. whitney and kelsey both scored three tries, while thalia and rookie adria
orr each came out with two. key to brown's success, however, was the superb rucking and support of the forwards
led by captain jennifer hustwitt and senior eight man sarah swett, who also scored a try.
brown's b-side continues their run
the brown b-side followed up their extraordinary semi-final finish at beantown with another win over the williams b-side. brown's consistent tackling kept williams on their heels, and malika rubin-davis won brown 15 of the games 16 lineouts, including 11 steals. scrumhalf yadi ibarra ran the ball weakside off a five meter scrum to put brown on the board in the first half and some clutch play from
the wings and fullback alice alpert kept williams scoreless to the end, giving brown a 5-0 win.

Spring 2004 Recap
Brown finished its 2004 spring season with a competitive record of 7-2. They began the
season by winning the Washington DC Cherry Blossom tournament. Brown learned the value
and dedication of every player on the team, with many rookies getting some of their first
A-side minutes, playing fiercely to beat Vassar in a rematch of the Northeast semi-final
game from the fall. The following weekend Brown regrouped and travelled to Princeton to
win their first ever Ivy League title by beating Dartmouth in the final. The day before
they beat Columbia soundly and the top-seeded National Final-Four (at least) host team
Princeton with a last minute try. In their last weekend, Brown traveled to Penn State for
their first ever National Tournament appearance. Although they played with their trademark
'never say die' attitude, the season's injuries took their toll on the small team, and
Brown lost to both Chico St. and Marquette. But no one watching those games could deny the
heart and determination that Brown displayed on the pitch that weekend, and throughout the
season. Congratulations on a great season. Brown Pride

Brown finishes the fall 2001 season 3rd in New England!
We concluded our fall season with a 6-2 record, falling 16-15 in a heartbreaker to Cornell
in the Northeast Elite Eight. We finished our regular season in second place in the New England
Eastern Conference and earned a spot in the New England playoffs! After beating both Amherst College and Smith College, we earned 3rd place in New England and the #5 seed in the Northeast playoffs. Read about our triumphs at the New England playoffs in the Brown Daily Herald or read the full unedited version. All in all, it was an amazing season. Under the leadership of senior captains Mary Vieira and Mary Montgomery, the team flourished, defeating Yale, Radcliffe, Boston College, and Boston University. Our only regular season loss came to the eventual Northeast champs, Dartmouth, and they defeated us by their smallest margin all season -- 12 points |
