Brown Men’s Rugby Reveals New Website

June 24th, 2009 Posted in Men's Rugby |

Michael D. Bernstein, Class of 1982 provided a very generous donation to pay for this new Brown Rugby website. Almost one year ago, Michael walked up to coach Coach Jay Fluck at a Boston Red Sox game. They had not seen each since 1982 and spoke at length. Michael asked if he could do anything for the Rugby program, and Jay suggested that Brown Rugby needed to build a new website. Within a week Michael had sent a donation to cover the entire cost. We are thrilled with the result and very proud to launch this site for all Brown Rugby Alumni, friends and families. It is hoped that the website will become the primary source for rugby information, entertainment and communication. Thanks again Michael!

Women’s Rugby Falls to Stanford at National Semi’s

May 8th, 2009 Posted in Women's Rugby |

It wasn’t such smooth sailing for Stanford, but the tournament hosts beat Brown 31-12. The score was flattering to Stanford, who led by only five points 51 minutes into the game. Mel Smitt capped off a prolonged period of pressure for

Stanford 11 minutes in, and Jessica Watkins capped off a simple but effective backline move to race in untouched at 20 minutes. Smitt added the conversion for a 12-0 lead.

But Brown would not bow out and kept up with their hard-driving play. Using centers Frankie Male and Alex Hartley to punish the Stanford defenders, they looked to wear the Cardinal down. The efforts worked well and Yari Ibarra’s try – off an eight

man shove in the scrum – made it 12-5 with 13 minutes left in the half. But Watkins ran down a beautiful chip ahead by flyhalf Amelia Villines to make it 17-5 at the break.

Brown had plenty of ball and were solid in the set pieces, and as time went on their plan to wear down Stanford seemed to be working. But they could not secure enough ball in contact – as knock-ons in the tackle and poached balls sent them backpedaling far too early. Frankie Male’s try made it 17-12 at 51 minutes, but Brown’s failure to take care of the ball saw Stanford pull away.

Club Sport Athlete of the Month for April: Lily Cohen ‘11

April 7th, 2009 Posted in Athlete of The Month, Women's Ultimate |

Lily Cohen ’11 from Waillingford, Connecticut is the April Club Sport Athlete of the Month. Though this is only Lily’s second season playing club Frisbee, and her first year on the A-team, she has proved to be an invaluable scoring machine. She is an incredibly hard worker that never stops running, on offense or defense , earning her lots of goals and run-through Ds. As a past Women’s Varsity Squash player at Brown, Lily’s athleticism allowed her to excel at Frisbee almost immediately upon learning the game.

Lily first got exposed to Frisbee by playing in pick-up games during the summer. One of her best friends from home plays and encouraged her to stick with the sport. At Brown, she started playing for the B-team the spring of her freshman year (Spring ’08) after Squash season had officially ended. Her athleticism and general sports sense from Varsity Squash carried over beautifully, allowing her to pick up the game breathtakingly fast. Her love for the sport led her to commit even more time towards the Women’s Frisbee A-team this year. Though a new member of the team, Lily is one of the key deep cutters whose hard running has resulted in a majority of the team’s scores. Her speed, great hands, and spot-on field sense make her incredibly difficult to defend. Lily is an overall solid offensive and defensive player that Disco Inferno is proud to have on their roster.

The devotion and time Lily puts into Frisbee, translates to her schoolwork and other activities at Brown. Lily is a human biology concentrator with a focus on international health. Moreover, she is a member of the food co-op West House, and a member of both the Honduras Initiative and GAIA student groups.

Brown saved the best for last dominating the Raleigh women, a Division 1 club team and rolling to a 19-0 win. Much of the match was played under driving rain at the Raleigh fields, one of the better rugby facilities in the US. The Raleigh women looked strong as they took the field, but from the opening whistle Brown just exploded on them driving the ball in the forwards and running hard and fast in the backline. Brown put together a beautiful phase 6 minutes in, every Brown player contributed and fullback Chelsea Garber ‘12 finished it off to score in the corner and put Brown up 5-0. Raleigh never did really recover and spent a majority of the match within their own half.
