Marcianne
Marcianne is certified in spinning and personal training. Marcianne’s goals at Brown are to help others achieve weight loss and exercise goals through cardiovascular classes. She looks forward to helping you achieve your goals!
Jodi
Jodi has been teaching group fitness for over eight years. One of Jodi’s favorite formats of exercise is cycling. “You can always challenge yourself with cycling. The resistance and speed you pick is on your own. You can escape on a mental vacation for an hour.” Aside from cycling, Jodi is a personal trainer and instructs many other formats of group exercise such as Yoga & Pilates.
Angelica
Angelica is certified in Spin and group training. I have been spinning for only a year now. Her goal at Brown is to motivate people to work out and have fun doing it. Angelica enjoys playing all different types of music for everyone.
Joseph
Joe is a long time practitioner of Chinese Martial Arts. He has studied with some of the world’s foremost instructors of Tai Chi Quan. As well as the martial and health aspects of Tai Chi, Joe also incorporates Chinese medical theory, philosophy and metaphysics into his teachings. The classes are fun, instructional and an excellent workout for both the mind and the body.
Jeana
Jeana has been a certified personal trainer through AFAA since 1993. She has had success working with all populations. Jeana’s approach to training is challenge the body in a safe, effective manner. Whether looking to lose or gain weight, build muscle, increase endurance or just tone up, Jeana will help you achieve your goals. Jeana is also certified in nutrition, spinning and gravity training. Her knowledge, skills and experience have proven successful in helping others to reach their full potential.
Alexis
Alexis is Brown’s cardio kickboxing guru and brings a great deal of passion and experience to Brown for over six years. Alexis brings a high level of energy, enabling students to benefit from her classes. Alexis is a Brown Alumni who came to Providence from NYC. Alexis is the Youth Projects Coordinator at Lifespan Community Health Services. Her classes are challenging, designed to strengthen mind and body. She warmly welcomes beginners to advanced to join her.
Evans
An ACE-Certified Personal Trainer, Evans is passionate about the many aspects surrounding wellness, and improving people from the inside out. Evans also enjoys teaching bootcamp style classes. He is motivating, inspiring, and will get you into the best shape of your life!
Sheryl
Sheryl A. Marsland has been a Fitness Specialist and Personal Trainer for over 27 years. Her certifications are through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) in the following areas: Certified Personal Training, Fitness Nutrition, Sports Conditioning, Exercise Therapy, Youth and Senior Fitness and Water Aquatics. Throughout her career, Sheryl has continued to educate herself in the latest personal training techniques and methodology. She has recently achieved her certification as “Master Trainer” which is the highest level of achievement from the ISSA. In addition to being a personal trainer and fitness instructor at Brown University, Sheryl also teaches Health Education and Physical Education at a local Catholic High School while still conducting her own personal training business. Sheryl is a former Body Building Champion and American Gladiators winner and has made fitness her way of life throughout her lifetime. Sheryl makes her primary objective to teach her clients to learn about their bodies and themselves while accomplishing their goals.
Amy
As staff member of Brown, Amy joined the Athletic Department in 2008. Exercise has always been a major component in Amy’s life. She was introduced to spinning in 2006 and really liked the diversity it brought to her cardio routine. Amy decided to get certified to teach what she loves – spinning! Amy is a Jersey native and has been in Rhode Island since 2008.
Barbara
Barbara is a certified yoga instructor, reiki practitioner, and holistic counselor. Barbara has been teaching yoga for many years at various locations including corporate fitness centers, schools, YMCA, and her own studio. She is a counselor for Au Pair in America, an agency which provides live-in child care/cultural exchange programs. She provides support to au pairs who come to Rhode Island from countries around the world.
Kathy
Kathy has been an avid cyclist for many years. She loves to work with beginners and experienced riders alike. Her passion for helping others and keeping it “fun and exciting” is part of her positive attitude toward fitness for all levels. Kathy is Johnny G certified through Madd Dog Athletics and AAAI/ISMA. She also holds certifications in sports nutrition, strength and conditioning, weight training, and personal training. Kathy says, “They say enthusiasm is catchy and I’ve got plenty of it! Join us at Brown for the ride of your life.”
Susannah
Determined to excel as a fitness professional, Susannah is a certified summer as AFAA Group Fitness Instructor. Susannah enjoys teaching Zumba® and loves to add her own spin to it. She is also eager to pursue kickboxing, personal training, and whatever else comes her way. Susannah is very happy to be a part of Brown’s Physical Education Department and can’t wait to grow as both an individual and as an athlete.
Danielle
Exploring the connection between physicality, health and artistry, Danielle has been teaching for the past 9 years. Her goal is to pass along tools for daily balance, maitri and malleability of mind through the body. *Faith in the vehicle of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga developed under Richard Freeman in Boulder, Colorado. This traditional school captured her attention for its simple cultivation of both technicality and enjoyment, results concordant with the lessons of her childhood mentor, a protégé of Isadora Duncan. Participating in the performance art of New York City, instructing pilates, gyrotonic and contact improv to a wide spectrum of students, steeping in the Feldenkrais method and delving into Tibetan medicine prepared her to feel at home in the heart of lineage teaching. She delights in the vantage point offered by headstands for bridging cultures of ritual with those of analysis, with those of rock and roll. Interested in the movement of ideas, Danielle holds a degree in political theory from Columbia University where immersion in yogic philosophy came from Gandhi scholar Dennis Dalton, Buddhism professor Robert Thurman and painter Archie Rand. She works to awaken the sensory system to its center via new choices and direct experience.
Kimberly
As a young person Kimberly was a competitive skater until the age of 18 when she began teaching while in school to earn her BFA in Sculpture. She is a registered U.S. Figure Skating instructor and is insured through the Professional Skaters Association. Her coaching career includes students of all levels from first timers through USFS Senior level testers. Aside from sharing her talents as an ice skating instructor, Kimberly is the proprietor of a millinery shop, studies iaido and is an accomplished equestrienne.
Samantha
Samantha was first attracted to Vinyasa yoga because of its flow and inward focus of practice. Samantha has gone through a transformational journey with yoga in recent years, overcoming anxiety and finding peaceful balance in the life of a student. She hopes to bring the joy of yoga practice to everyone. Samantha trained at the YogaWell in San Diego, CA. Samantha attends Rhode Island College, studying philosophy and dance.
Lora
Lora LoPiccolo is an energetic and fun-loving certified Yoga Teacher, Zumba Instructor, and WillPOWER & Grace Intern. Her teaching style is dynamic, supportive and disciplined. Students in Lora's classes often find themselves opening up in ways they never thought they could. She encourages all of her students to move from a place of center in the safest way possible. This method translates into students living stronger, more fluid lives, with less interruption by injury. Whether she is teaching a Yoga class, a Zumba session or a WillPOWER & Grace experience, Lora encourages ALL of her students to smile!
Aisha
Aisha has been involved in dance, fitness, and athletics for 14 years. Former competitive cheerleader, dancer, and track athlete, she has a diverse range of fitness knowledge. She plans to integrate all of her experiences into her classes here to create holistic dance and fitness opportunities for the entire Brown community.

Parker
Parker practices a slower Yin style of Yoga but likes to mix things up in her classes and introduce people to many different styles of Yoga. She teaches to reach, has a passion for Yoga and encourages students to view it as art and find their true, honest, pure expression of practice. Parker is also a spinning instructor and personal trainer. She incorporates her love for music, wellness and Yoga philosophy into all of her classes. She is originally from New York City, but has also lived in Miami and Boston.
Shay
Shay's experience and passion for tennis and squash is truly one that enables his students to have a strong foundation in developing their talents. As Shay would say "I'm old enough to know the wonderful games I teach in Physical Education. Trophies are around somewhere, but not enormous ones." He believes that these sports nicely combine exercise, fun, and satisfaction.
Lori
After going through many start and stop exercise resolutions, Lori finally found herself comfortable with the guidance and motivation of the fitness class instructors. She began to develop a passion for fitness and wellness, and after seven years was encouraged to become a certified fitness instructor. Lori hopes to continue to share her passion for fitness and inspire her students to live a healthy lifestyle no matter what level or age. It’s her goal to continue to grow in her personal knowledge and share her enthusiasm with many.
William
William is a graduate of the Methodist University, holding a B.A. in Music Education and B.S .in Biology. William is a former member of The Heat Dance Team in Fayetteville, North Carolina and several other respected organizations. In addition to performing, William enjoys teaching a variety of dance formats including jazz, ballet and contemporary.
Rachel, Sarah & Caroline
Rachel, Sarah and Caroline were all abroad in Europe last semester and are thrilled to be back in the OMAC teaching Zumba! They have participated in many sports including field hockey, lacrosse, and competitive cheerleading- but they're happiest when teaching Zumba! Come check out their jointly taught class for three times the fun, three times the energy, and three times the workout!
Serena Swartz
Serena brings a revolutionary approach to achieving her client’s health and fitness goals. Serena says, “It’s important to customize the exercise to the person, not demand the person fit into the exercise." Serena offers a diverse background, specializing in nutritional counseling, Pole Fitness, kickboxing, aerobics, spinning, pilates, step, bootcamp, dance and personal training. Serena has attended the Young Personal School for Performing Arts for seven years, and holds a Master’s in Education from Nova Southeastern University.
Fabienne
Fabienne focuses on the alignment of Iyengar, the communication of the body with the breath and the life force energy flowing. She enjoys flow yoga as well as yin yoga and her teaching is very influenced by the coaching of Sarah Power and Joseph Lepage, a yoga therapist who sees yoga as a spiritual healing. She speaks freely and opens her heart to see the light, the love, and the potential in each one of us. In her teaching, she honors mother earth, the sun, the moon, and the universe's influences. This allows us to remember that we are more than what we think and that the life force energy is working with us continuously. As the knowledge of Yoga is a continuous wisdom, she actively continues to study all aspects of the legacy of yoga. She has been enjoying yoga for over 20 years and teaching Yoga for 11 years and is a certified yoga therapist from integrative yoga therapy. She also practices Thai yoga massage and a Reiki practitioner.
Tanya
Tanya joined Brown PE staff in 2000, when she first taught hip hop dance. Since then, Tanya has directed the intensive summer dance program at Phillips Academy Andover and has taught hip hop at Columbia University and Dartmouth College. Although a classically trained dancer, Tanya loves the rhythm and energy of popular dance styles such as street jazz and jazz funk. In her spare time, she continues to take professional dance classes in New York City, and employed as an assistant professor of art history at Rutgers University.
Joanna
Joanna is a chemistry PhD graduate student at Brown and is excited to join the physical education staff this semester. Joanna played 4 years of NCAA Division I tennis at Wagner College. Serving as team captain she led team practices and physical conditioning sessions for athletes. Joanna will bring her fitness and college athletics experience to Guts and Gluts and hopes to make it an active and exciting class all will enjoy!p>
Felix
Felix Garcia, Spinning certified instructor with over 10 years of experience in fitness and nutrition.I like to challenge my riders to get the best out of them and encourage them to live a healthy life style. The best of indoor cycling is that everything is about having fun and Spinning is for everyone. Come ride with me and have fun.
Kelsie
Kelsie is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine. She has been in the Health & Wellness field for about 15 years and has experience in various types of training, both group and personal training. Although her training capability can be with any level of fitness, Kelsie believes the best success is obtained through intense physical fitness, challenging beyond one's limits!
Kelsie says, "Physically, you become stronger and more confident in your appearance, which boosts self-esteem almost instantly! Mentally, you gain strength as well with each workout accomplished. You start to believe you ARE capable because you prove it to yourself with every workout." This is the philosophy Kelsie lives by in her workouts.
