Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid (ATRT) of Infancy and Childhood

This 8 year old boy presented with findings of a mass in the region of the pineal gland. The malignant rhabdoid

cells show eccentric nuclei and prominent nucleoli. In some cases areas of small blue cells resembling primitive

neuroectodermal tumor are seen and differential diagnosis  can be difficult.  The term rhabdoid tumor was first

applied to a malignant tumor of the  kidney, originally called the rhabdomyosarcomatoid variant of Wilms tumor.
