Horseshoe kidneys are fused at the lower poles. They cannot undergo normal rotation resulting in the hila facing anteriorly. Isolated horseshoe kidneys carry a good prognosis. However, in general, fused kidneys “keep bad company”, being associated often with more serious malformations in other organs sometimes as part of chromosomal disorders, especially Turner syndrome and trisomy 18.
