Graduate Advising
Ph.D. students are advised by the Director of Graduate Studies in their first year; by the faculty member who teaches the required second year seminar in their second year; and by the chair of their preliminary exam committee and the chair of their dissertation committee in subsequent years but often call on a wide range of faculty, both inside and outside the department, for advice. In addition, the DGS stands as the departments' representative, liaison to the Graduate School, and principal advisor to all Ph.D. students.
