URBAN EDUCATION FELLOWS
In the fall of 2008, the Education Department at Brown University proudly introduced the Urban Education Fellows. The goal of the Urban Education Fellows Program is to increase the capacity of the schools and districts within Providence and the urban core of Rhode Island with highly qualified policy analysts and teachers. Urban Education Fellows dedicate three years of postgraduate work to the Providence urban core in exchange for tuition forgiveness. Beginning with the class of 2009, eight fellows will engage in teaching opportunities, building upon their studies in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, while the remaining two fellows will engaged in policy related activities in the region, utilizing the their skills from the Urban Education Policy (UEP) program.
Service will be completed with full-time positions within a public sector education organization or within a public elementary or secondary setting. In order to receive loan cancellation, Fellows must be directly employed within a region designated as a Providence urban core school system. A Rhode Island urban core school system is defined as a school district qualified for receiving federal funds and/or a district whose enrollment is comprised of 30% or more of low-income families.
Our commitment to the Providence urban core continues for the MAT and UEP classes of 2009-2010.These commitments are inspired in part by the report to the University’s Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice. To apply to the Urban Education Fellows choose one of the links below:
