In this, our fifth newsletter installment, we look at our annual UEP internship Conference, bringing together practitioners and policy makers from across the New England region for a daylong session focusing on the opportunities and challenges, best practices and strategies for change in urban education policy. Also included is a spotlight on our community outreach efforts here in the department to bring 8th grade students to campus for “A Day on College Hill.” UEP alumni and faculty features round out our spring 2009 publication.

This winter the Education Department at Brown University has been quite busy as we have welcomed our first cohort of Urban Education Fellows, a group of young men and women, who have made a three year commitment to live and work in the Providence urban core in an effort to build capacity in urban districts in the greater Rhode Island area. Our newsletter also features an update on our alumni and their current efforts to bring about change in the field of urban education, as well a faculty and community outreach spotlights.

This spring, the Education Department has been quite busy as we have welcomed a New Director of Education Outreach, Tehani Collazo, Class of 1991 (see page 3) as well as engaged in numerous community outreach initiatives such as our Algebra in Motion Pilot (see page 4). In addition, our Spring 2008 newsletter offers highlights from our core faculty concerning their recent work within the education field as well as in-depth internship profiles from students working to make significant education change across the state of Rhode Island.

Since our last publication, the Education Department has been quite busy with our Summer Institute on Data Driven Decision Making (see page 2), visits to the Rhode Island Governor's office (page 5) as well as placing our first cohort of UEP students into the policy world (page 6). In addition, you will find highlights from our UEP core faculty as they reflect on the first year of the program as well as thoughts from our second cohort interning in major cities outside of Providence.

This spring reader's gain an in-depth policy perspective on two distinctive nonprofit internship placements and the role that our UEP masters candidates, Katherine Wieland and Christian Caldarone, are playing in reshaping the urban education landscape.
We also read about the life and work of two of our distinguished faculty members, Dr. Michael Grady of the Annenberg Institute for School Reform and Dr. Cynthia Garcia Coll. Both professors reflect on the new program, what it means for their teaching as well as for the future of urban policy.
