Urban Education Policy @ Brown

Financial Aid

To help students in the Urban Education Policy program finance their education, several forms of aid and employment are available:

Ruth J. Simmons Fellowships in Urban Education Policy

The fellowships are supported through the generosity of the Oak Brook Bank Charitable Trust in Oak Brook, Illinois. UEP students who are awarded this Fellowship are expected to work in the greater Chicago area upon their graduation. This Fellowship encourages the UEP program to actively recruit prospective students from the greater Chicago area. The first recipient of this prestigious fellowship will be competitively selected from the pool of 2007 applicants.

General Scholarships
The Education Department offers general scholarships in varying amounts to many students who are admitted to the UEP program. To be considered for these scholarships, students should mark the appropriate box on the university application form. No separate financial aid application form is required for consideration. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive, merit basis.

Loans
To apply for federal loans, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAPSA). This form is available from the Federal Student Aid Program at (800) 433-3243. Alternatively, students can fill out this form online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students can also apply for loans through private lenders.

Research Assistantships
UEP faculty members, who work on a wide range of research projects, are committed to providing paid research assistantships to students when possible. Most students in this first year’s class have research assistantships with various UEP faculty members from the Education Department and the Annenberg Institute for School Reform.

Other Employment
UEP participants are eligible for student employment at the University. The Brown Office of Student Employment posts a large number of jobs for which admitted students may apply. Compensation varies with the type of work undertaken.
