Visiting Professors in the Humanities
2012 Fall Semester
Elizabeth Giorgis received her doctorate degree from the Department of History of Art and Visual Studies of Cornell University and her Masters in Museum Studies from New York University. She served as the Dean of the Skunder Boghossian College of Performing and Visual Arts and as Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University. She teaches Art Theory and Criticism in the Graduate Schools of the College of Performing and Visual Art and the Institute of Ethiopian Studies and is the author of several publications among which are, “Charting Ethiopian Modernity and Modernism”, a special issue on Ethiopian art and literature in Callaloo, Journal of the African Diaspora (Johns Hopkins University Press,2010), “Salem Mekuria, Ruptures: A Three-Sided Story”, Contemporary African Art and Shifting Landscapes; “Ethiopian Cities in Ruins: Modernity and its Discontents”, Fera Internacional de Arts Contemporiano, IFEMA Madrid, 2010); “Contemporary Ethiopian Art in a Changing World, Art Criticism and Curatorial Practices in Marginal Contexts”, (International Press of the Association of Art Critics, 2005). Dr. Giorgis is also the editor of the only catalogue of contemporary art published in Ethiopia, Gebre Kristos Desta: The Painter Poet. She has curated several exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum, Gebre Kristos Desta Center and the Museum of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. Dr. Giorgis has participated in several international conferences and public lectures, recently in New York University on “The Making of Modern and Contemporary Ethiopian Art” and at Brown University on “Aurality, Visuality and Digitality”. She currently conducts a weekly radio program on Ethiopian arts and culture.
Dr. Giorgis was in residence from September 14-October 14, 2012. She presented a public lecture "Ethiopian Modernism: A Subaltern Perspective" on September 21 and will be leading a colloquium in Africana Studies entitled "Revolutionary Motherland or Death:Students’ Work during the Derg Period (1974-1991)" on September 19.
Dr. Giorgis's visiting professorship was part of the Brown in the World/The World at Brown grant funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Mu Hu is currently an Associate Professor of Translation and Culture Studies at Nanjing Normal University and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS), Nanjing University.
His recent monograph, "Collision between the Worlds of Translated Text and Societal Reality: An Approach to Sociological Translation Studies" was published by the Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, 2011. Other recent articles include "Translation Studies: Back to Social Reality," Chinese Translators Journal, 2011; "Translation Studies: Beyond Cultural Turn," Jiangsu Social Science, 2011; and "Perspective on Translation Teaching (1980-2006)," Chinese Science and Technology Translators Journal, 2009.
His current research project at IAS is on the translations of Chinese literature into English. Part of the research he will pursue while at the Cogut Center will include an examination of how the English translations of Chinese literature have been read, received and studied in the US.
Dr. Hu was in residence from November 15 - December 15, 2012. He met with many students and faculty in East Asian Studies and Translation Studies.

Alejandra Prieto is a director, researcher, acting teacher, performer, puppeteer and puppet maker and has also worked extensively in Spain and Croatia as an actress. Currently she is conducting research on her thesis “Gender and Politics of Resistance in Contemporary Spanish Women Playwrights” at the University Carlos III which she will defend in 2013.
Alejandra is the artistic director of The Winged Cranes, a performance theatre platform created in 2008 to work with other international artist on themes related to identity and social political change. The first company’s play Don’t Kiss Me, I Am in Training (2008) has been to Edinburgh Theatre Festival, “Reencontres” in Marsella, Visible Festival (Madrid) and Imatra Festival (Finland). Second project The Soldier With No Name (2009) premiered in London and opened the Bilbao Festival of Puppet Art in 2010. Winged Cranes’ third project Bernarda´s Backstage, based on Federico García Lorca´s The House of Bernarda Alba has recently received the award in Prague Festival for the Best Dramaturgical Concept in May 2012.
She received a Fulbright grant in 2005 to study directing in Sarah Lawrence College, New York. In New York she met the International British Company Blind Summit with whom she has built a strong relationship. She has worked with BS as a performer on The Call of the Wild (Royal Opera House) and An Odd Angel (Battersea Arts Centre) and also as a puppet maker on Low Life, Fairies (Royal Opera House), Shun-Kin (Complicité) and On Emotion (Soho Theatre).
Alejandra has also worked in Europe as a performer with the International acclaimed Croatian company Bacaci Sjenki in 2009-201 in the awarded performance Ex´positia.
In Spain continues her work as an acting teacher and director and will be a resident artist-teacher in the Spring semester of 2013 at Ullate´s School of Dance and Drama where she will be directing the play Celebration, by Thomas Vintenberg and Morgens Rukov .
In the Fall 2012 Alejandra taught mujeres ARRIBA! Feminist Playwrights in Spanish Theater for the Theatre Arts and Performance Studies (TAPS) department. Her visiting professorship was supported in part by the Brown in the World/The World at Brown grant funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
