Humanities Research Group Grants

The Cogut Center sponsors semester-long Humanities Research Groups that aim to foster collaboration by faculty members and graduate students from diverse departments who share common research interests. Groups meet periodically during the semester (usually twice a month) to discuss works in progress and to host guest scholars invited by the participants. The Cogut Center will consider proposals for up to $5,000 for speakers, symposia, group projects, books, and materials.

Each Research Group must be comprised of at least three (3) Brown faculty from at least two different departments or disciplines. Proposals should indicate the anticipated program and potential outcome(s) of the Research Group, which may take the form of individual publications, collaborative publications (i.e. a co-authored work, a collection of essays, a critical edition, or an exhibition), grant applications for further collaborative research, or the refinement of a research program leading to one or more of these goals. Brown graduate students may be proposed for membership in a Research Group when a student's work is directly related to the proposed project. Research Group membership is not restricted to Brown faculty and cross-institutional participation is welcomed. Research Groups must submit a report at the end of the semester.

Applications should include a brief description of the proposed research project and an itemized budget request for up to $5,000, along with a brief explanation/justification of each budget line item. A Research Group may continue to receive Cogut Center support for a second semester in cases where the formal request for an extension and first-semester report on activities indicate that such an extension is warranted.

Research Group applications will be vetted by the Cogut Center Governing Board and award decisions will be based on the quality of the proposal, the feasibility of the project, and the potential contribution to humanities scholarship and to intellectual life at Brown.
