Christopher Witmore took his Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology at Stanford University (2005), and has been in instrumental in crafting new approaches to media in archaeology.

Before coming to Brown, Dr. Witmore was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Stanford Humanities Lab, a center for Digital Humanities, and a Lecturer with the Department of Classics at Stanford University. He is also the former Assistant Director and a senior founding member of the Metamedia Laboratory at Stanford which is dedicated to issues related to visualization in archaeology.

His work with media has focused on a range of questions from how archaeologists manifest qualities of the material world to how we might expand our range of articulation and expression in archaeology. Several articles dealing with these topics have appeared in Archaeological Dialogues, Visual Anthropology Review, Norwegian Archaeology Review, and the Journal of Material Culture.

His primary interests are landscape archaeology, archaeological thinking, material culture, new media in archaeology, the history of archaeology, and field practices. His research areas include the Mediterranean in general and the Argolid and Crete in Greece as well as western Sicily, more specifically.
