Undergraduate Student Paper Prizes Sponsored by
The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World

The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World is pleased to announce three prizes to honor undergraduate students who have shown great accomplishment in the study of archaeology through their writing.
Students can submit up to one paper per category. Students may submit a paper to more than one category, provided that it meets the guidelines for each of the categories in which is it being considered (for example, a paper may be submitted to categories 1 and 3, or 2 and 3).
The prizes are as follows:
- Archaeology Paper Prize: ARCH0001-ARCH0999:
Student paper prize for the most outstanding piece of writing in an Archaeology and the Ancient World (ARCH) class at the introductory level (courses under ARCH0999) taken during the academic year 2007-8.
Award: $150.00
- Archaeology Paper Prize: ARCH1000-ARCH1999:
Student paper prize for the most outstanding piece of writing in an Archaeology and the Ancient World (ARCH) class at the advanced or graduate level (courses ARCH1000 and above) taken during the 2007-8 academic year.
Award: $250.00
- Archaeology Paper Prize: All Courses:
Archaeology paper prize for the most outstanding essay dealing with any aspect of archaeology, from any time period or geographical region. This competition is not restricted to papers submitted to an Archaeology and the Ancient World (ARCH) course but is open to any piece of unpublished writing written for a course taken at Brown University during the 2007-8 academic year, exclusive of honors theses. This includes papers by undergraduates submitted to graduate seminars.
Award: $350.00
Winning submissions will receive cash awards and will be published on the Joukowsky Institute’s website, www.brown.edu/joukowskyinstitute. Winners will be contacted via email, and winning papers will be announced at the Joukowsky Institute’s Commencement ceremony on May 25, 2008.
How to Apply:
- Essays must be submitted as attachments, as Microsoft Word or Adobe pdf documents, via email to joukowsky_institute@brown.edu
- All submissions must include a completed submission form, available via download as a pdf document or Word document.
- The email’s subject heading should read “Student Paper Prize”
- All undergraduate students are eligible to apply
