Since the late 1970s, the Brown Department of Music has operated out of a suite of buildings along Hope Street. The main facility is the stately Orwig Music Building, which houses classrooms, faculty and staff offices, and the university's Music Library. Down the path behind Orwig is Grant Recital Hall, the department’s newly renovated performance space. This hall does double duty, both as a lecture theater and the department's main venue for chamber music, jazz, voice, and world music performance.
The Morrison-Gerard teaching studios and Fulton Hall adjacent to Grant provide additional teaching and rehearsal space. Further down the block, the Steinert Practice Center contains a collection of practice rooms.
Also to be found in Steinert are a choral classroom, a multimedia classroom, and—on the second floor—the studios for MEME (Multimedia and Electronic Music Experiments), dedicated to the research and production of digital music and multimedia.
