Professor Dana Gooley wins Wendy J. Strothman Award

Professor Gooley has been awarded the Wendy J. Strothman Faculty Research Award, which is awarded annually for a project in the Humanities. The award will allow him to carry out research in the archives of the Berlin National Library for his book in progress, "Sounding Sideways: Improvisational Aesthetics in Nineteenth Century Music." In Berlin Professor Gooley will search journals, newspapers and manuscripts to reconstruct how pianists improvised and explain how improvisation was valued by audiences and critics before it died out in the later nineteenth century.
