of NEW FRENCH and AMERICAN MUSIC
with Ensemble Zellig and visiting composers
Don Freund • Phillipe Hersant
October 28-30, 2010
During the months of October and November 2010, the French chamber group, Ensemble Zellig will tour in France and the United States, presenting a concert of four newly commissioned premieres by French and American composers. Ensemble Zellig is an internationally recognized quartet comprised of flute, clarinet, cello and piano specializing in contemporary music. The composers are, from the United States; Don Freund, Professor of Music, Indiana University, and Edmund Campion, Professor of Music, University of California at Berkley. And from France; Philippe Hersant, composer, and Philippe Leroux, composer and Professor of Composition, IRCAM, Paris. The fifth composer, and coordinator for this project, is Gerald Shapiro, Professor of Music at Brown University.
The Premières festival at Brown is the centerpiece of that larger project and will be the opening event of the American portion of the tour on the weekend of October 28-30. Visiting composers Philippe Hersant and Don Freund, along with Ensemble Zellig, will join Shapiro at Brown for a three-day residency. The festival will showcase the work of the five composers and current Brown University graduate students on two concerts. The first concert will be, of course, the World Premiere performance of the tour program. For the second concert, the visiting composers, working with Ensemble Zellig, will help prepare performances of new works by Brown student composers. In addition to working directly with these and other student composers, the visitors will present a master class, and a colloquium, and meet with classes in the Department.
All events are free and open to the public.
