Music 0200: Computers and Music

An introduction to the field of computer music, focusing on the use of electronics and computers in music composition, analysis and synthesis of sound, and related topics. Investigates basic acoustics, perception of sound, the history of music technology, and musical applications. There are no prerequisites, though some experience with computers and some knowledge of music is very helpful. Students will have significant hands-on experience with computer music systems during the course. TA sections and all project work takes place in the Brown Multimedia Lab.

Music 0220, 0221: MEME Ensemble (half credit)

An ensemble devoted to free improvisation with new media. Experimental approaches to sound and focused listening techniques are explored with acoustic instruments, live electronics, real-time video, together with networked improvisation, and more. By audition. Enrollment limited to 12. Written permission required. S/NC.

Music 1200: Seminar in Electronic Music -- The Recording Studio as Compositional Tool

A hands-on study of advanced sound recording and mixing techniques taught in parallel with topics in psychoacoustics. The goal of the course will be to create, enhance and refine music compositions in the studio while developing listening and technical skills for audio production. Technical topics include audio signal processing and mixing, microphone techniques and live sound engineering for performance. Students will use Protools software along with other studio hardware and software to complete exercises and create original work.

Music 1210: Seminar in Electronic Music -- Introduction to Real-Time Systems

An introduction to interactive computer music composition, programming and performance. Topics including real-time DSP, event scheduling, algorithmic generation, machine listening, score following, and performance techniques will be studied alongside current repertoire. Weekly programming assignments will culminate in an original midterm and final composition and performance.

Music 2260: Topics in New Media Theory and Composition

A production class exploring the ideas and techniques surrounding the simultaneous use of multiple digital media to create artistic work for installations and performance. Technical issues focus on real-time programming and human-computer interaction. Collaborative projects may combine performance, sculpture, computer music, hypertext, live video processing, and graphics to stimulate experimentation with new integrated art forms.

Music 2200: Composition Seminar

A weekly forum for graduate composers to share and critique current projects. Visiting artists and analysis of relevant modern repertory will augment class discussion of student work. Individual private lessons - taught in addition to the three-hour seminar - help students focus on compositional technique and other problems of expression specific to their own projects. May be repeated for credit. Written permission required.

Music 2220: Designing and Playing Alternate Controllers

Explores the science and aesthetics of designing alternate controllers for musical performance. Topics include basic electronics and hardware prototyping, instrument construction, theories of gesture, human-computer interface issues, and the challenges of mapping sensor data to meaningful musical parameters. Written permission required.

Music 2270: Topics in Digital Media Research and Production

Graduate level production seminars exploring ideas and techniques surrounding the use of digital media to create new artistic forms. These courses offer a forum for the critique of works realized within the seminar and the presentation of specific technical areas for group research. Specific topics will change in response to emerging technology.

Music 2260: Topics in Computer Music Theory and Analysis

Graduate-level seminars focused on the analysis, theory, technology and history of musical forms utilizing electronic means. Critical reading, writing, and discussion sustain the course as it investigates Computer Music as a field with a rich heritage at the intersection of science and the arts. Creative projects will be used to investigate theoretical ideas.

Music 2280: Designing Large-Scale Multimedia Projects

Graduate-level production seminar designed for students working on a single, large project in Multimedia and/or Computer Music. The course covers planning and implementation strategies, with group critiques of proposals and works-in-progress. The class structure includes individual lessons for students working on a graduate or undergraduate thesis project.
