About the Department
There is always something going on in the classrooms, rehearsal space, library, dance studio and theatre in Lyman Hall; in our studio, shop, and proscenium theatre in Faunce; and in our studio and shop space in the John St. Design Studio. Undergraduates, graduate students, staff and faculty are constantly busy making theatre, dance, performance art, scholarship, designs, sets, plots, costumes, philosophies, plays, manifestos, installations, conversations, and fabulous combinations of everything. Faculty all have office hours and welcome talking with students. In fact, students make Lyman their home even when they concentrate in a different department or make most of their theatre and dance in student groups beyond our stages.
The Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies offers three concentration tracks: one in Theatre Arts, one in Performance Studies, and one in Writing for Performance. These concentration tracks are described in greater detail in the Courses section on this site. All three tracks of study make full use of Brown's flexible curricula.
