Financial Support
Doctoral students are guaranteed five years of full tuition support as well as an admirable stipend and health benefits. The first year is awarded Fellowship, meaning that a student does not have any requirements beyond coursework. The second three years are awarded as Teaching Assistantships or Proctorships. The final year is a Dissertation Fellowship. Some flexibility is allowed. For example, should a student be awarded an outside grant for study, financial support from Brown may be deferred. If a student is in good standing and still needs time to complete the dissertation after five years, a student may apply for continuing funding, though that funding is not guaranteed.
