Below is a schedule, followed by general descriptions, of courses currently offered in the Visual Art Department. VISA0100 (or VISA0110) is a prerequisite for all other courses listed, unless a waiver is obtained through a portfolio review. All courses have strictly limited enrollment and require written permission in order to register.

Studio Foundation Design (VISA0100)

This is a prerequsite for all visual art courses, except for VA0110 (see next entry). It is not solely meant as a technical course. Rather, it is also intended as an experience which cultivates the capacity for visual thinking in the individual.

Advanced Studio Foundation (VISA0110)

Instructor approval for this course is granted following a review of portfolio submissions. The Visual Art Department will be reviewing candidates for the Advanced Foundation Studio (VISA011) until Oct 28th for the Spring 2012 semester. Students are notified of the class roster by Prof. Paul Myoda on Nov. 1, 2011. Interested students should submit a CD of 10-15 images of their work to the Visual Art Department Office by 5:00 pm, Fri. Oct. 28th.

Foundation Media: Sound + image (VISA0120)

This foundation studio course focuses on the production and theory of screen-based digital media artwork and introduces the computer as a medium and a tool for art. The principles and techniques web design, and sound and image production are addressed in readings, screenings, and a number of specific projects.

Drawing (VISA1100-level courses)

Drawing from nature, still life, the model, and the imagination in a variety of media. Great emphasis is placed on creative work and classroom participation.

Printmaking (VISA1200-level courses)

Big Woodcut, Silkscreening, and Lithography are offered on a rotating basis.

The Art of the Book (VISA1240)

Investigating the book as an art form, and providing students with the background and means necessary for the complete creation of a book.

Painting (VISA1300-level courses)

Studio courses based on painting principals relating to traditional and contemporary issues. In advanced courses, individual criticism is emphasized.

Sculpture (VISA1400-level courses)

Studio courses addressing basic sculptural methods (i.e., additive, subtractive, casting, and assemblage) and materials (i.e., wood, metal, plaster, and found objects). Students develop sculptural solutions to given sets of problems. Contemporary issues are raised in critiques and readings. No prior experience in sculpture is required for introductory courses.

Photography (VisA1500-level courses)

Introductory courses focus on black and white photography, addressing production and theory with emphasis on pictures that tell stories. Students execute a portfolio of original photography images, and examine and analyze the function, purpose and effectiveness of those images through a series of writings. Through execution of visual problems and writing, students examine the content and function of contemporary analog/film images. Advanced courses introduce students to digital photography, refining technical skills and developing individual photographic visions.

Seminars in Production (VisA1800-level courses)

Advanced-level seminars in film, video and/or the fine arts, coupled with readings in theory and analysis.
