The form vám is called an ethical dative". This use of dative tends to imply that the subject of the sentence is a "possession" or "a part" of the dative referent. In this example, the wife is therefore presented as though she were the narrator's possession. The ethical dative may report that the referent of the dative is affected (un)favorably by the situation described by the sentence.
